Chapter 5 - THE WAR OF THE DOCKS

The following morning, sunlight poured through the high windows of the estate, illuminating the lush green gardens outside.
While Lily was downstairs with Mrs. Gable learning how to bake sugar cookies in the grand kitchen, Adrian sat in his subterranean war room beneath the estate.
Marcus laid out several tactical maps across the mahogany table.
"Boss," Marcus said, his face grave. "Victor Vance has officially declared open season on Vale assets. He's blocked three of our shipping containers at Pier 14, and he's demanding we hand over Sarah and Lily by midnight, or he'll blow up our fuel depot in Queens."
Adrian sat in his leather chair, pouring himself a cup of black coffee, completely unfazed.
"Victor Vance thinks he's dealing with a business rival," Adrian murmured, taking a sip. "He doesn't realize he's dealing with a man protecting David Carter's child."
"What are your orders?" Marcus asked.
"Deploy Units Three and Four to Pier 14," Adrian commanded softly. "Reclaim our containers. And tell Victor Vance that if he sets foot on Vale territory, I won't arrest him. I'll bury him."
At that moment, the door to the war room clicked open.
Lily stood in the doorway, holding a small plate with a freshly baked cookie, looking around the high-tech room filled with security monitors.
Marcus bowed respectfully and stepped out, leaving them alone.
Lily walked up to the heavy mahogany desk, placing the plate near Adrian’s coffee cup. "I made this for you."
Adrian looked at the warm, slightly misshapen cookie, then up into her hopeful hazel eyes. The man who ruled the city's underworld felt his chest tighten with an emotion he hadn't experienced in decades.
"Thank you, Lily," Adrian said softly, taking a small bite. "It's delicious."
Lily smiled, leaning her elbows on his desk. "Are you a superhero, Mr. Adrian?"
Adrian paused, looking down at his dark, tattooed hands—hands that had built an empire through violence and fear.
"No, sweetheart," Adrian said honestly. "I'm very far from a superhero."
"My Mama said you came when nobody else would," Lily said quietly, her voice dropping into a tender whisper. "She said you saved our lives."
"Your father was a brave man, Lily," Adrian told her. "He saved me once. I'm just paying back a debt."
May you like
Lily reached out, her tiny hand covering his large, scarred wrist. "You don't owe us anything, Mr. Adrian. We like you because you're nice to Mama."
Adrian looked at her small hand, a soft, resolute promise taking root deep within his heart.
