Chapter 2 - THE BREACH AT MAPLE STREET

The black armored SUV tore through the quiet suburban streets, its engine low and guttural in the midnight stillness.

Inside, Adrian Vale sat with his arms crossed over his chest, his dark eyes staring out into the rain.

Beside him sat Marcus, his chief security operative and a veteran of two foreign wars. Marcus checked the magazine of his sidearm, his eyes shifting to his boss.

"Boss," Marcus said softly. "Maple Street is outside our territory. It falls under the Red Syndicate's neighborhood. If we roll in heavy, it could trigger a territorial war."

"I don't give a damn about territories tonight, Marcus," Adrian said, his voice dropping into a register colder than winter ice. "A child texted my personal secure line."

"How did she even get that number?" Marcus asked.

"I don't know," Adrian replied. "And right now, it doesn't matter. What matters is that she's twelve years old and hiding under a bed."

Three minutes later, the SUV swerved onto Maple Street, stopping abruptly in front of House 18.

The two-story suburban house was dark except for the flickering light of the living room television.

Even from the driveway, Adrian could hear the muffled sound of shouting and a woman weeping.

Adrian stepped out of the vehicle, his long black trench coat sweeping behind him. He didn't wait for Marcus to flank him. He walked straight up the front steps.

Inside, Ethan—a thirty-five-year-old low-level loan shark with a history of violence—had Sarah Carter pinned against the wall by her collar.

"You think you can hide money from me, Sarah?" Ethan spat, his face red with rage. "You give me that debit card or—"

BOOM!

The heavy oak front door didn't just open—it shattered inward, bursting off its hinges in a shower of wood splinters and metal fragments!

Ethan shrieked in surprise, letting go of Sarah as she collapsed to the hardwood floor, gasping for breath.

Adrian Vale stepped through the ruined doorway.

Tall, broad-shouldered, and impeccably tailored in a dark three-piece suit, Adrian carried an aura of absolute death that turned the warm living room into a freezer.

Ethan drew a folding knife from his pocket, his hands shaking. "Who the hell are you? Get out of my house before I cut you!"

Adrian didn't even look at the knife. He walked forward with slow, deliberate steps.

"You're Ethan," Adrian said, his tone conversationally calm.

"I said get out!" Ethan lunged forward with the knife!

Adrian moved with terrifying, effortless speed. He caught Ethan’s wrist mid-air, twisted it backward until a sickening SNAP echoed through the room, and slammed Ethan’s face into the marble coffee table!

Glass shattered. Ethan let out a high-pitched scream of agony, dropping the knife as blood poured from his broken nose.

Adrian placed his heavy leather boot directly onto Ethan’s chest, pinning him to the floorboards.

"If you make another sound in front of this woman," Adrian whispered, leaning down, "I will ensure you never speak again."

Ethan choked back his cries, whimpering in terror as he recognized the dragon tattoo visible beneath Adrian's shirt cuff.

Above them, at the top of the stairs, a small face peeked through the railing.

Lily Carter stood there, clutching her mother's old phone to her chest, her big hazel eyes wide with awe and wonder.

Adrian looked up from the bloody man on the floor. His harsh, terrifying expression melted instantly as he met the little girl's eyes.

"Lily?" Adrian asked gently.

May you like

Lily nodded slowly.

Adrian offered her a small, reassuring smile. "You called. I came."
