Chapter 9 - THE ADOPTION

Six months later.

The family court auditorium in downtown Manhattan was quiet and peaceful.

A warm morning sun streamed through the high stained-glass windows, illuminating the polished mahogany benches.

Judge Margaret Vance—a respected elder judge with no relation to Victor Vance—sat behind the bench, looking down over her reading glasses at the family standing before her.

Adrian stood in an immaculate navy suit, holding Sarah’s hand tightly in his left, while his right hand rested on twelve-year-old Lily’s shoulder.

Lily wore a beautiful bright yellow dress with a white bow in her hair, holding a official leather-bound folder.

"Mr. Vale," Judge Vance said, her tone warm and dignified. "You have submitted a formal petition for the legal adoption of Lily Carter, with the full consent and support of her biological mother, Sarah Carter."

"I have, Your Honor," Adrian answered clearly, his voice carrying an unwavering strength.

"You understand that legally, this will make you her full father, with every responsibility, right, and obligation under the law?"

"I do, Your Honor," Adrian said, looking down at Lily with profound pride. "She has been my daughter in my heart since the night she texted me. I am simply making it official."

Judge Vance smiled broadly, raising her wooden gavel.

"By the power vested in me by the State of New York," Judge Vance announced, "I hereby declare Lily Carter to be legally named Lily Vale—the daughter of Adrian and Sarah Vale!"

TAP!

The gavel struck the sounding block!

Lily let out a joyous squeal, throwing her arms around Adrian's waist! Adrian lifted her into his arms, spinning her around in the center of the courtroom as Sarah joined the embrace, wiping tears of pure happiness from her cheeks.

Marcus and Mrs. Gable stood in the front row of the gallery, clapping proudly as the new family held each other tight.
