Chapter 10 - The Grand Ball

One year after the tragic incident at the Grand Astoria, the Romano compound hosted the most magnificent gala the city had ever seen.
The annual winter charity ball—previously hosted by the disgraced Sinclair family—had been completely taken over by the Romano Foundation. The event was held in the grand glass pavilion of the Romano estate, decorated with sparkling fairy lights, soaring ice sculptures, and thousands of fresh white roses.
The guest list included the most prominent figures in the state, from high-profile politicians and international business leaders to renowned medical researchers. But unlike the cold, pretentious galas of the past, the energy tonight was filled with genuine warmth, generosity, and celebration.
All proceeds from the gala were dedicated to the Abigail Foster Blood & Medical Research Foundation—a charity established by Matteo to fund blood banks, rare phenotype research, and free healthcare for low-income pregnant mothers across the nation.
The doors opened, and the crowd turned as Matteo Romano entered the grand pavilion.
He looked devastatingly handsome in an immaculate black tuxedo. Clutched securely in his left arm was little Hope, who wore a tiny white velvet dress and looked curiously at the glittering lights.
And walking right beside him, her arm looped gently through his, was Abigail.
She was a vision of absolute beauty and elegance. She wore a sweeping, floor-length emerald silk gown that complemented her warm skin and dark hair. Around her neck rested the mother's ruby necklace, and on her left hand, the diamond and ruby engagement ring glittered beneath the chandeliers.
She walked with supreme confidence, no longer the tired, invisible server who had been slapped on a ballroom floor, but a woman adored, respected, and elevated to the highest heights of society.
Isabella stepped forward, wearing a matching emerald dress, her face radiant with happiness. She took little Hope from Matteo's arms, kissing the baby’s cheek. "I’ll take the princess to her nursery so you two can open the dance floor."
"Thank you, Isabella," Abigail smiled warmly.
As the string quartet began to play a slow, romantic waltz, the crowd parted respectfully.
Matteo led Abigail to the center of the polished dance floor. He placed his right hand firmly against the small of her back, taking her soft hand in his left, and pulled her smoothly into the dance.
"Are you nervous?" Matteo whispered softly into her ear as they glided effortlessly across the floor under the watchful, admiring eyes of four hundred guests.
"Not at all," Abigail murmured, looking up into his dark eyes, feeling the steady, powerful rhythm of his heartbeat beneath his tuxedo jacket. "As long as I'm with you, I'm never nervous."
"Look at them," Matteo said gently, glancing around the room at the guests applaud softly. "A year ago, people in rooms like this thought they could walk over you. They thought you were nothing."
"And now?" Abigail asked with a soft, radiant smile.
"Now," Matteo declared, his voice full of fierce pride and deep love, "they know you are the queen of this family. The woman who saved us all."
From the edge of the dance floor, cameras flashed softly, capturing the image of the billionaire tycoon holding his future bride close in his arms. But neither Matteo nor Abigail cared about the cameras, the wealth, or the high-society elites watching them.
They spun together in the warm light, locked in their own world—a world built on sacrifice, fiercest protection, and an everlasting love that had emerged from the darkest of storms.

Abigail rested her head against Matteo’s chest, closing her eyes as the sweet music washed over them.
She was no longer the pregnant waitress struggling to survive in the cold rain. She was loved. She was protected. She was home.
