Chapter 9 - The Promise

Six months had passed since the night Hope was born, and the Romano estate was filled with a vibrant, joyful warmth that it had not known in decades.

The sound of soft baby giggles echoed down the grand corridors as Hope grew into a bright, energetic baby girl. She had inherited her mother’s sweet, expressive smile and Matteo’s dark, sharp eyes. She was the absolute center of the Romano universe. Isabella doted on her constantly, buying far too many baby clothes and toys, while Mrs. Gable cooked special organic purées.

And Matteo was completely wrapped around his tiny daughter's finger.

The fearsome billionaire mob boss, whose name made international businessmen tremble, could routinely be found sitting on the plush rug of his grand study, letting tiny Hope pull at his silk ties while he read her children's bedtime stories in his deep, commanding voice.

Abigail watched from the doorway of the study, holding a tray of afternoon tea. A warm, peaceful smile spread across her face as she watched Matteo gently lift Hope into the air, making the baby squeal with delight.

"Mr. Romano," Abigail teased gently, stepping into the room. "Are you getting any work done, or are you letting your new boss dictate your schedule?"

Matteo looked up, a rare, radiant smile breaking across his handsome features. He carefully set Hope back down on the soft play mat and stood up, walking over to take the heavy tea tray from Abigail’s hands.

"The new boss is far more demanding than any board of directors," Matteo replied smoothly, setting the tray on his desk and wrapping a protective arm around Abigail’s waist, pulling her flush against his chest. "And far more rewarding."

Abigail leaned her head against his broad shoulder, enjoying the warm, safe feel of his embrace. "She loves you so much, Matteo."

"I love her," Matteo murmured, kissing the top of Abigail’s head. "And I love her mother."

Abigail went still in his arms, her heart skipping a beat. Though they had shared kisses, tender moments, and unspoken devotion over the past months, hearing those three words spoken so openly and clearly sent a thrilling rush of warmth through her veins.

She pulled back slightly, looking up into his dark, intense eyes. "Matteo..."

"I love you, Abigail," Matteo repeated, his voice deep, firm, and entirely devoid of hesitation. "I think I fell in love with you eight years ago when you gave your blood to save my sister. But living with you, raising Hope with you, watching your gentle strength every day... you have become my entire heart."

Tears of pure happiness welled up in Abigail's eyes. "I love you too, Matteo. So much."

Matteo smiled, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a small velvet box—much like the one he had given her months ago, but smaller. He dropped to one knee on the plush rug, right beside little Hope, who clapped her tiny hands as if she knew what was happening.

He opened the box, revealing a breathtaking ring featuring an oval-cut diamond surrounded by a halo of tiny, glowing rubies—a matching tribute to the necklace she wore every day.

"Abigail Foster," Matteo said, his voice laced with a deep, sacred promise. "You gave me back my sister. You gave me back my faith in goodness. And you gave me a family. Will you do me the absolute honor of becoming my wife?"

Abigail covered her mouth, happy tears spilling down her glowing cheeks. She looked down at the man who had pulled her out of the dark, protected her from every storm, and cherished her and her child with every fiber of his being.

"Yes," Abigail sobbed joyfully, kneeling down right beside him. "Yes, Matteo! A thousand times yes!"

Matteo slipped the magnificent ring onto her finger, framing her face with his hands and pulling her into a deep, passionate kiss that sealed their futures together forever. Hope let out a happy babble beside them, reaching her tiny hands out to grab both of their sleeves.

Matteo pulled away slightly, laughing as he gathered both Abigail and little Hope into his massive, protective embrace.

"Our family is complete," Matteo murmured against Abigail’s lips.

"It's just the beginning," Abigail whispered back, resting her forehead against his.
