Chapter 4 - The Storm Gathers

The morning sun filtered softly through the sheer linen curtains of the master suite, painting the room in warm shades of gold. Abigail woke slowly, feeling more rested than she had in years. The plush mattress felt like a cloud compared to the lumpy, spring-filled mattress of her old apartment.
She sat up, resting a hand on her pregnant belly. Her baby kicked softly, as if greeting the morning.
A gentle knock sounded at her door, followed by Mrs. Gable entering with a breakfast tray that looked like it belonged in a five-star hotel. Freshly squeezed orange juice, fluffy eggs, warm pastries, and fresh berries were arranged neatly beside a vase of white lilies.
"Good morning, Miss Foster," Mrs. Gable said warmly, placing the tray across Abigail's lap. "Mr. Romano insisted that you rest in bed as long as you like today."
"Thank you, Mrs. Gable," Abigail smiled, overwhelmed by the luxury. "Where is Matteo?"
"He has been in his study since six o'clock this morning," Mrs. Gable replied, her tone turning slightly serious. "He is dealing with the fallout from last night's event."
Meanwhile, downstairs in the grand mahogany study, Matteo sat behind a massive executive desk. The atmosphere in the room was tense. Marcus, his head of security, stood quietly near the floor-to-ceiling windows, while two legal advisors sat nervously across from Matteo.
"Give me the update," Matteo commanded cold, staring at his laptop screen.
"The news of the incident at the Grand Astoria has spread like wildfire through the business community, sir," Marcus reported. "Photos of you kneeling before Miss Foster have been leaked to the press. The media is speculating wildly about her identity."
"Let them speculate," Matteo said coldly. "Ensure her face is blurred in any published photographs. I want her privacy protected at all costs."
"Understood," Marcus nodded. "And regarding the Sinclairs?"
"Richard Sinclair has been frantically calling your office every ten minutes," one of the lawyers interjected. "He is desperate to reverse the contract cancellations. Their stock price has already plummeted twenty percent in pre-market trading."
"Tell him his calls will not be accepted," Matteo ordered without a hint of mercy. "By the end of the week, I want Sinclair Enterprises completely restructured or sold off in pieces. They made their choice when their daughter laid a hand on Abigail."
Suddenly, the heavy oak doors of the study burst open.
Vanessa Sinclair pushed past two security guards, her eyes red-rimmed, her hair unkempt, completely devoid of the polished elegance she had displayed the previous night. Her father, Richard, rushed in behind her, looking frantic and exhausted.
"Matteo! You can't do this!" Vanessa screamed, her voice cracking with desperation. "You are destroying my father's entire life's work over a stupid waitress!"
Matteo slowly closed his laptop. He didn't rise from his chair, nor did his expression change, but the pressure in the room plummeted instantly to sub-zero temperatures.
Marcus and two armed guards stepped forward, their hands resting near their holsters.
"You have five seconds to leave my estate before I have you arrested for criminal trespassing," Matteo said, his voice terrifyingly quiet.
"Please, Matteo!" Richard begged, falling to his knees before the desk, his hands clasped together. "I apologize for my daughter's conduct! She is young, she was foolish, she didn't know who the girl was! We will publically apologize to Miss Foster! We will pay her millions! Just don't destroy our company!"
"She is not 'a girl'," Matteo spat, rising slowly from his desk. His massive frame seemed to cast a shadow over the entire room. "Her name is Abigail Foster. And your daughter did not just disrespect a server—she assaulted a woman who gave her own lifeblood to save my sister when your high-society friends turned their backs."
Vanessa’s eyes flashed with anger despite her fear. "She's nobody! She was lucky to be in that hospital! You're ruining us for a charity case who probably doesn't even know who the father of her bastard child is!"
SLAP!
The sharp sound echoed through the study.
It wasn't Matteo who had struck her.
Isabella Romano stood in the doorway, her eyes blazing with absolute fury, her arm still extended from delivering a stinging slap across Vanessa’s cheek.
"Keep your filthy mouth shut," Isabella snarled, stepping into the room with a fierce intensity that matched her brother's. "You came into our home to insult the woman who gave me a second chance at life? You are grotesque, Vanessa."
Vanessa clutched her burning cheek, staring at Isabella in pure shock.
"Marcus," Matteo commanded, his voice cold enough to freeze blood. "Remove them from my property. If either of them comes within a hundred yards of Abigail or my sister again, ensure they spend the rest of their lives behind bars."
"With pleasure, boss," Marcus growled, grabbing Richard and Vanessa by their collars and forcing them out of the study. Their desperate screams and pleas echoed down the grand hallway until the heavy front doors slammed shut.
Isabella took a deep breath, smoothing down her dress before turning to look at her brother. "Is Abigail awake?"
Matteo’s stern expression softened instantly at the mention of her name. "Yes. Mrs. Gable took her breakfast."
"She needs peace, Matteo," Isabella said softly, walking over to his desk. "The Sinclairs are desperate. Desperate people do dangerous things."
"They won't get near her," Matteo vowed, his jaw tightening. "I will personally guarantee her safety. No matter what it takes."
Upstairs, Abigail stood near the window of her suite, looking out over the manicured gardens below. She had heard the faint echoes of shouting from the courtyard moments ago and felt a knot of anxiety tighten in her stomach.
She knew Matteo was a powerful, dangerous man. She knew he operated in a world far beyond her comprehension. But every time he looked at her, she saw no danger—only an overwhelming, profound sense of protection.

She placed a hand over her heart, feeling it beat steady and true. For years, she had been running, fighting, and surviving entirely on her own. But standing in this grand estate, surrounded by people who viewed her not as an invisible server, but as a savior, she realized that her life had changed forever.
And deep down, a quiet, lingering thought began to take root in her mind: perhaps she had finally found a place where she belonged.
