Chapter 6 - The Shadows Return

The peaceful sanctuary of the Romano estate shattered in an instant.
Inside the study, the mood was suffocatingly dark. Matteo stood behind his desk, holding a copy of the legal notice that had just been served. His eyes burned with an icy, murderous rage that made even Marcus stand at attention near the doorway.
"Explain this," Matteo growled, throwing the document onto the mahogany desk.
One of his top legal strategists, a sharp-featured woman named Eleanor, stepped forward. "Julian Vance has filed for emergency parental rights and sole custody upon the birth of the child. He claims that Abigail is financially unstable, unemployed, and currently living in an environment associated with... organized crime interests."
"He abandoned her!" Isabella yelled from the leather couch, her hands clenched into tight fists. "He left her when she was four months pregnant! He didn't leave a single dollar for medical care or rent!"
"Legally, that is true," Eleanor explained calmly. "However, Vance's petition is backed by substantial financial funding. He suddenly has access to high-end legal representation from one of the most aggressive firms in the state. Someone is bankrolling him."
Matteo’s eyes narrowed into slits. "The Sinclairs."
"Precisely," Eleanor nodded. "Richard Sinclair may be facing bankruptcy, but he still has enough hidden assets to fund Julian Vance’s legal team. They are using Vance as a weapon to drag you and Miss Foster through a messy, public custody battle to destroy your reputation."
Abigail sat in a high-backed armchair near the fireplace, her hands trembling uncontrollably as she clutched a warm cup of tea. "He... he doesn't want the baby," she whispered, her voice cracking with pure anguish. "Julian never wanted to be a father. He told me the baby would ruin his life. He's doing this for money. The Sinclairs are paying him to hurt me."
Matteo crossed the room in swift, silent strides, kneeling right beside her chair just as he had done on the floor of the ballroom weeks ago. He gently took the trembling cup from her hands and placed it on the side table, wrapping his large, warm hands around her cold fingers.
"Look at me, Abigail," Matteo commanded softly.
Abigail looked into his dark, steady eyes, finding a sudden anchor amidst the storm brewing in her mind.
"He will not take your child," Matteo vowed, his tone absolute and unshakable. "I don't care how many lawyers Sinclair hires. I don't care what court they go to. No one will ever take your baby away from you. Do you hear me?"
"Matteo... the courts might look at me and see an unemployed woman living in a stranger's house," Abigail sobbed, tears spilling down her cheeks. "I don't have a stable home of my own. I don't have a job..."
"You have me," Matteo said fiercely, his thumb gently wiping away a tear from her cheek. "You have the full weight of the Romano name behind you. You are not alone anymore, Abigail. Never again."
He turned his head toward Eleanor. "Draft an immediate response. File counter-suits for abandonment, emotional distress, and fraud against Julian Vance. And look into Vance’s personal life. I want every debt, every dark secret, and every illegal activity he has ever engaged in delivered to my desk by tomorrow morning."
"Consider it done, Mr. Romano," Eleanor replied, packing her briefcase and quickly leaving the room.
That evening, the compound was placed on high alert. Security patrols around the perimeter were doubled, and Marcus personally oversaw the monitoring of all surrounding roads.
Abigail sat on her bed, staring out at the dark gardens. The joy and peace she had felt over the past three weeks had been replaced by a familiar, suffocating fear. She knew how cruel Julian could be. He was a manipulative, selfish man who used people until they had nothing left to give.
The soft door swung open, and Matteo stepped inside. He had removed his jacket, his dark shirt unbuttoned at the collar. He carried a small file folder in his hand.
"Can't sleep?" he asked gently.
"Every time I close my eyes, I see Julian's face," Abigail confessed softly, her arms wrapped tightly around her waist. "I keep thinking about what will happen if the judge believes his lies."
Matteo walked over and sat on the edge of the bed beside her. He set the folder down. "He won't win, Abigail. My team already uncovered his motives. Vance owes over two hundred thousand dollars to illegal gambling syndicates across the state. Sinclair promised to clear all his debts and give him a million dollars in cash if he successfully files for custody and creates a public scandal."
Abigail gasped. "A million dollars... he's selling my baby."
"He is trying to," Matteo said, his voice dropping into a dark, protective tone. "But he made one fatal mistake."
"What mistake?"
"He forgot that you are under my protection," Matteo said, taking her hand in his. His gaze was fierce, unyielding, and filled with a deep, consuming affection that left no room for doubt. "I will burn his world to ashes before I let him lay a finger on you or your child."
Abigail looked into his eyes, feeling the sheer magnitude of his strength wrapping around her weak heart. "Why are you doing all of this for me, Matteo? It's not just about the blood donation eight years ago, is it?"
Matteo went quiet for a long moment. He looked down at their joined hands, his thumb gently caressing her knuckles, before raising his eyes back to hers.
"Eight years ago, when I saw my sister lying in that hospital bed, hooked up to machines, I felt completely helpless," Matteo confessed quietly, his voice raw with emotion. "I had all the money and power in the world, but none of it could save her. And then you walked in. You didn't know us. You had nothing to gain. But you gave everything you had to save a stranger."
He stepped closer, leaning in until his breath brushed softly against her cheek.
"For eight years, I searched for the woman who saved my sister," Matteo whispered softly. "But in the three weeks you have been in my home, Abigail... I realized I wasn't just searching for a savior. I was searching for you."
Abigail’s breath caught in her throat. Her heart hammered wildly against her ribs as she stared at the powerful man leaning toward her, his dark eyes filled with undisguised love and devotion.

Before she could speak, Matteo leaned forward and gently pressed a warm, soft kiss against her forehead, holding it there for a long, sacred moment.
"Rest tonight, Abigail," he murmured softly against her skin. "Tomorrow, we end this."
