Chapter 7 - Confrontation

The heavy oak doors of the county courthouse opened, letting in the cool morning air.
Reporters and photographers were gathered outside the steps, kept at bay by a thick line of Romano security personnel. The news of the impending custody motion had leaked, turning the private legal dispute into a media circus.
Abigail stepped out of the tinted back seat of the Maybach, wearing an elegant dark blue maternity suit that accentuated her grace and poise. Matteo walked beside her, his hand resting firmly against the small of her back, providing an immovable wall of support. Isabella and a team of top-tier attorneys walked closely behind them.
Inside the private hearing room, the atmosphere was thick with tension.
Sitting across the long mahogany conference table was Julian Vance. He wore an expensive suit that didn't quite fit his nervous demeanor. Beside him sat his high-priced lead attorney and Richard Sinclair, who sat in the back corner of the room like a shadowy puppet master, trying to maintain a cold, arrogant smile despite his ruined business empire.
When Julian saw Abigail enter, he offered a smug, rehearsed smile. "Hello, Abigail. You look... remarkably well taken care of."
Abigail ignored him, sitting down beside Matteo at the main counsel table. She kept her chin up, refusing to let her former abuser see an ounce of fear in her eyes.
The presiding judge, a stern woman named Judge Henderson, entered the room and took her seat at the head of the table. "We are here today to review an emergency motion for parental rights filed by Mr. Vance regarding the unborn child of Miss Abigail Foster. Counsel, present your opening arguments."
Julian’s attorney stood up immediately, adopting an overly confident posture. "Your Honor, my client, Mr. Vance, is the biological father of the child. He was tragically separated from Miss Foster due to financial strain three months ago. Upon discovering that Miss Foster was living in the residence of Mr. Matteo Romano—a man widely investigated for organized crime activities—my client became deeply concerned for the safety and moral environment of his child. We request immediate temporary custody upon birth."
Judge Henderson flipped through her files, her face unreadable. "Miss Foster's counsel?"
Eleanor stood up smoothly, opening a thick leather binder. "Your Honor, Mr. Vance's claims are an absolute fabrication designed to extort money from my client. We have documented evidence showing that Mr. Vance explicitly abandoned Miss Foster on June 14th after she refused his demands to terminate the pregnancy."
Julian’s face flushed red. "That’s a lie!"
"Quiet, Mr. Vance," Judge Henderson warned sharply.
"Furthermore," Eleanor continued, pulling out a series of financial statements and bank logs, "we have uncovered that Mr. Vance has accumulated over two hundred thousand dollars in illegal gambling debts to various criminal loan sharks. And just three days ago, an offshore account registered in Mr. Vance's name received a wire transfer of five hundred thousand dollars from a shell corporation directly owned by Mr. Richard Sinclair—who sits right there in the corner."
The room went dead silent.
Richard Sinclair’s arrogant smile vanished instantly, replaced by a look of sheer terror. Julian visibly panicked, sweat pouring down his neck as he looked frantically at his attorney.
"This motion is not a father seeking his child," Eleanor declared powerfully. "This is a paid conspiracy to harass and intimidate Miss Foster."
Judge Henderson’s eyes narrowed into terrifying slits as she glared at Julian and Richard. "Is this true, Mr. Vance?"
"I... I..." Julian stammered, his bravado crumbling into dust. "I just want what's mine!"
Matteo slowly stood up from his chair.
He didn't yell. He didn't raise his voice. But his towering presence filled the room with a suffocating weight that made everyone, including the judge, take notice.
"You left her," Matteo said softly, his voice echoing off the wood-paneled walls with lethal clarity. "You left her alone, cold, and pregnant in a damp apartment. You gave her nothing. You offered her no help. And when she was struck and humiliated by people like Sinclair, you were nowhere to be found."
Matteo walked slowly around the table, stopping right behind Julian’s chair. He placed one large, heavy hand on the back of Julian’s seat, leaning down slightly so his dark eyes were inches from Vance's terrified face.
"You are not a father," Matteo whispered, his tone cold enough to stop a heart. "You are a vulture trying to profit off the life of a woman who possesses more honor in her soul than you could ever dream of. If you ever come near her again, if you ever speak her name again, I will ensure that every single loan shark you owe money to finds out exactly where you are sleeping."
Julian shuddered violently, shrinking back into his chair as if trying to disappear completely into the leather cushion.
Judge Henderson slammed her gavel down onto the wooden block with a loud, resounding CRACK.
"Enough!" Judge Henderson commanded sharply. "I have heard all I need to hear."
She looked directly at Julian Vance, her expression filled with profound disgust. "Mr. Vance, your petition for parental rights is dismissed with prejudice. Given the overwhelming evidence of financial fraud, abandonment, and conspiracy, I am issuing an immediate, permanent restraining order against you on behalf of Miss Foster and her child."
Julian opened his mouth to object, but no words came out.
"Furthermore," Judge Henderson added, looking sharply toward Richard Sinclair, "I am referring the financial records presented today to the District Attorney's office for immediate criminal investigation into bribery and conspiracy."
"Hearing adjourned!"
CRACK!
As the judge rose and left the room, Richard Sinclair collapsed back into his chair, completely destroyed. Julian Vance gathered his papers with trembling hands and fled out the side exit like a beaten dog, terrified to make eye contact with anyone.
Abigail sat frozen in her seat, tears pouring down her face—not of fear, but of overwhelming, unadulterated relief. The nightmare was finally over. The shadow that had hung over her pregnancy had been completely erased.
Isabella immediately threw her arms around Abigail, crying tears of joy. "You did it, Abigail! It's over!"
Matteo walked back to Abigail's side, ignoring the legal team and reporters waiting outside. He reached out and gently cupped her face in his hands, wiping her tears with his thumbs.
"I told you," Matteo murmured, his eyes blazing with dark warmth and ferocious protection. "No one takes what is mine to protect."

Abigail looked up into his eyes, placing her hands over his. "Thank you, Matteo. Thank you for saving me."
"You saved us first, my miracle," Matteo whispered back softly. "Now let's go home."
