Chapter 8 - A New Beginning

Two months passed in the blink of an eye.
Winter had descended upon the city, covering the grand grounds of the Romano compound in a sparkling blanket of white snow. Inside the main house, warm fires roared in every hearth, filling the halls with the soothing scents of cedar, pine, and cinnamon.
Abigail was now nine months pregnant, her due date just days away. Her life had transformed so completely over the past few months that her old life of serving trays and worrying about rent felt like a distant, fading bad dream.
She spent her days surrounding by love and comfort. Isabella had become her closest friend and confidante, spending hours helping her design and decorate a massive, beautiful nursery on the main floor. The nursery was painted in soft pastels, filled with hand-carved wooden furniture, plush toys, and a soaring glass window looking out over the snowy gardens.
And then there was Matteo.
Their bond had deepened into something extraordinary. Though Matteo was a busy man overseeing a global business empire, he never missed a doctor’s appointment, a meal with Abigail, or an opportunity to make sure she was completely comfortable. He listened to her talk about her dreams, her childhood memories, and her hopes for her child with an intense, unwavering devotion.
It was a quiet Tuesday evening. A soft snowfall was falling outside the grand bay window of the living room.
Abigail sat on the plush sofa, resting her feet on a low leather ottoman. Matteo sat beside her, reviewing some documents on his tablet, his large hand resting naturally against her heavy, rounded belly.
Suddenly, Abigail gasped softly, her body tensing as a sharp, tight wave of pressure rippled across her abdomen.
Matteo was on high alert instantly. He dropped his tablet onto the rug, his eyes full of immediate concern. "Abigail? What is it? Is it a contraction?"
Abigail caught her breath, waiting for the wave to pass before giving a soft, breathless laugh. "Yes... that was definitely a contraction. A real one this time."
Matteo was already standing, his calm executive demeanor instantly replaced by an urgent, protective focus. "Marcus! Call Dr. Vance and prepare the private medical wing immediately!"
"Matteo, calm down," Abigail smiled, reaching out to catch his hand. "The doctor said contractions would start slowly. We have plenty of time."
Matteo sat back down on the edge of the sofa, wrapping his hand tightly around hers. "I am not taking any chances with you, Abigail. Not now. Not ever."
Within twenty minutes, Abigail was settled comfortably into the private medical suite at the west wing of the estate. Dr. Vance and a team of top obstetricians and nurses were already in place, monitoring her vitals and ensuring everything was progressing safely and smoothly.
Isabella sat beside Abigail’s bed, holding a glass of water, while Matteo paced the room like a restless lion, refusing to leave her side for even a single second.
As the hours passed, the contractions grew closer and stronger. Throughout the intense labor, Matteo remained right beside Abigail’s head. He let her squeeze his hand with all her strength, wiping the sweat from her forehead with a warm cloth and whispering soft, steady words of encouragement into her ear every time a wave of pain hit.
"You're doing so well, Abigail," Matteo whispered softly, his deep voice serving as her anchor through the pain. "You are the strongest woman I have ever known. Just stay with me."
"It hurts, Matteo..." Abigail groaned, her knuckles white as she squeezed his hand.
"I know, my miracle. I know," Matteo murmured, leaning down to press a soft, tender kiss against her temple. "I'm right here. I'm not going anywhere."
At 2:14 AM, as the snow fell peacefully outside the window, a sharp, clear cry echoed through the medical room.
Dr. Vance smiled warmly, holding up a small, beautiful newborn wrapped in a warm pink blanket. "It's a healthy baby girl, Miss Foster. Seven pounds, six ounces."
Abigail let out a long, trembling breath, tears of pure relief and joy streaming down her cheeks.
The nurse carefully placed the tiny baby onto Abigail's chest. Abigail looked down at her daughter—a tiny creature with a mop of dark hair, soft pink cheeks, and dark, bright eyes that looked remarkably like Matteo’s.
Isabella wept tears of happiness from the corner of the room, while Dr. Vance and the medical team quietly stepped back to give them privacy.
Matteo stood over the bed, staring down at the newborn baby resting against Abigail's chest. The fierce, terrifying man who ruled an empire was completely overcome with emotion. His dark eyes glinted with tears as he reached out a trembling finger, gently touching the baby’s tiny, delicate hand.
The newborn instantly wrapped her miniature fingers around Matteo’s large index finger, gripping it tight.
A soft, breathless laugh escaped Matteo's chest. "She's perfect, Abigail. Absolutely perfect."
Abigail looked up at Matteo, her heart swelling with a deep, profound love that she could no longer deny. "Do you want to hold her?"
Matteo looked almost hesitant, as if terrified his immense strength might break something so fragile. "Are you sure?"
"Yes," Abigail whispered.
Matteo carefully slid his large hands beneath the small blanket, lifting the tiny baby girl up into his arms and cradling her against his broad chest with astonishing tenderness. He looked down at the tiny face, his heart melting completely.
"What are you going to name her?" Isabella asked softly, stepping closer to look at her new niece.
Abigail looked at Matteo, seeing the fierce, unyielding protection and gentleness in his eyes—the same man who had saved her life, reclaimed her dignity, and given her a true family when she had nothing.
"Hope," Abigail whispered softly, her eyes locked onto Matteo’s. "Her name is Hope Romano Foster."
Matteo froze, his head snapping up to look at Abigail. His chest heaved as a profound wave of emotion washed over him.
"Romano?" Matteo whispered, his voice thick with raw emotion.
"She deserves the name of the man who saved her mother," Abigail said softly, reaching out her hand to him. "And the man who gave us a place to call home."
May you like
Matteo leaned down, cradling the tiny baby safely in one arm, and wrapped his other strong arm around Abigail, pulling her close into a deep, tender embrace.
"I swear to you, Abigail," Matteo vowed softly against her hair, his voice filled with an everlasting promise. "I will spend the rest of my life protecting both of you. You will never walk alone again."
