Chapter 4 - The Unraveling

When Hannah re-entered the main hall, the room fell dead silent. Twenty-three pairs of eyes glared at her with intense hostility.
Bianca glared at her with pure disdain, leaning on her sister's arm. "Have you come out to give us back our money? Or are you going to stand there and watch this family be ruined by your greed?"
Hannah walked calmly toward the fireplace, stopping a few feet away from Roman and Nicholas.
"The family isn't being ruined by my greed, Bianca," Hannah said evenly. "It is being saved from yours—and from the snake sitting at your table."
"How dare you!" Bianca shouted, rising to her feet. "Roman, are you going to let her insult us further?"
"Let her finish," Roman commanded, his voice cutting through the noise like a blade. He stepped closer to Hannah, positioning himself as a physical shield between her and the angry relatives. "You have thirty-five minutes, Hannah. Explain."
Hannah pulled the silver flash drive from her pocket and tossed it onto the glass coffee table in front of Nicholas.
"Nicholas, why don't you explain to your aunt what happened to the foundation's secondary investment portfolio six months ago in Luxembourg?" Hannah asked casually.
Nicholas’s face tightened for a fraction of a second before he recovered his cool composure. He let out a soft, dismissive laugh. "Luxembourg? Hannah, I don't know what kind of desperate smokescreen you're trying to throw up right now, but our Luxembourg holdings are fully performing. They brought in a twelve percent yield last quarter."
"On paper," Hannah corrected sharply. "On fake, fabricated quarterly statements that you generated using a shell company registered in Panama under the name Vanguard Equities. A company where your personal signature appears as the sole beneficial owner."
The room collectively held its breath.
"What is she talking about, Nicholas?" Uncle Thomas, Nicholas's father, asked, frowning as he looked between his son and Hannah.
"She's lying, Dad!" Nicholas said quickly, his voice rising in pitch. "She's trying to deflect blame because she got caught red-handed! Roman, look at the wire authorization! It has Hannah's personal digital signature on it! She moved eight million dollars three days ago!"
"I did move the eight million dollars," Hannah said calmly. "I never denied that."
"See!" Bianca wailed. "She admits it again!"
"I moved it," Hannah continued, raising her voice to command absolute attention, "because three days ago, I discovered that Nicholas had quietly liquidated eight million dollars worth of high-yield bonds from the foundation's reserve fund to cover his massive short positions in the Asian real estate market!"
Nicholas turned deathly pale. "That's ridiculous! That's a bold-faced lie!"
"Is it?" Hannah took a step toward Nicholas, her eyes sharp as flint. "You thought you were clever, Nicholas. You knew the annual charity audit was scheduled for December 28th. You knew that if the auditors checked the reserve accounts, they would find an eight-million-dollar hole. So, last Tuesday, you logged into the foundation’s server using an IP-spoofing software designed to mimic my laptop’s MAC address. You initiated an emergency wire request to cover your short margin call before the market closed."
"You have no proof of that!" Nicholas sneered, though sweat was beginning to bead along his hairline.
"I didn't have the final proof three days ago," Hannah said. "Which is why I couldn't stop the initial transfer without triggering an immediate, public scandal that would have destroyed the Duca stock price instantly. So, I used my administrative override authority to intercept the outgoing transfer. I diverted the eight million dollars into a secure, blind escrow account under the direct supervision of the Swiss Federal Banking Commission."
Hannah checked the time on her phone.
11:45 PM.

"And in exactly fifteen minutes," Hannah said, looking directly into Nicholas's terrified eyes, "the Swiss regulators will release the unredacted digital audit trail showing precisely whose bank account initiated the authorization, whose IP address was used, and where the money was actually meant to go."
Nicholas swallowed hard, his hands trembling slightly as he tried to adjust his cuff links once more. The room was deathly quiet now; even Bianca had stopped shouting, staring at her nephew in sudden, creeping horror.
