Chapter 7 - The Arrest

The arrest of Nicholas Vale was swift, methodical, and brutally quiet.
Within minutes, the federal agents had cuffed his hands behind his back and read him his Miranda rights. Nicholas didn't look at anyone as he was led away through the heavy snow toward the waiting black SUVs, his polished shoes sliding uselessly on the icy driveway.
The heavy front doors clicked shut, locking out the freezing storm and leaving the grand hall in a stunned, agonizing quiet.
The twenty-three members of the Duca family stood like statues. The grand, arrogant atmosphere that had defined the evening was completely shattered. They looked at each other in shame, then slowly, hesitantly, turned their eyes toward Hannah.
Hannah stood by the fireplace, her breathing calm, her expression composed. Her green velvet dress caught the warm light of the fire, making her look regal, powerful, and completely unshakeable.
Uncle Thomas sank into an armchair, covering his face with his hands, weeping quietly over his son's betrayal and disgrace. The rest of the relatives looked down at the floor, unable to meet Hannah's eyes.
Then, Bianca Duca moved.
The matriarch of the family, a woman who had spent decades commanding respect, fear, and obedience, looked smaller than she ever had. Her posture was broken, her fine clothes suddenly looking heavy and burdensome.
She looked at her son, Roman, whose face was set in cold, unforgiving stone. Then she looked at Hannah—the woman she had called a nobody, the woman whose appearance she had mocked, the woman whose face she had struck just two hours prior.
Slowly, painfully, Bianca walked across the grand hall. Every eye in the room followed her.
She stopped two feet away from Hannah. Her hands were shaking violently. Tears had ruined her dark eyeliner, leaving grey tracks down her pale cheeks.
"Hannah..." Bianca’s voice was barely a whisper, cracked and trembling.
Hannah did not step back, nor did she speak. She simply waited, holding her mother-in-law’s gaze with calm dignity.
"I... I don't know what to say," Bianca stammered, her voice breaking. "I was... I was so blind. I was so angry..."
"You were embarrassed," Hannah said softly, but clearly enough for the entire room to hear. "You were terrified that your legacy was ruined, and it was easier to blame the outsider than to look closely at your own blood."
Bianca flinched as if she had been struck. The truth of Hannah’s words cut deeper than any physical blow could have.
"You saved my foundation," Bianca wept openly now, dropping all remaining pretense of pride. "You saved my family's name. You protected Roman... and you protected me from my own stupidity. And I... I laid my hand on you."

Bianca took a deep breath, dropped to her knees right there on the hard floor in front of her entire family, and looked up at Hannah with raw, unadulterated shame.
"Forgive me," Bianca begged, her voice echoing in the silent room. "Please... forgive me, Hannah."
