Chapter 6 - The Midnight Truth

11:55 PM.
Five minutes remained.
Nicholas took a deep, shaky breath and straightened his jacket. The polite, soft-spoken nephew was gone; in his place was a desperate, cornered animal.
"You think you're so smart, don't you, Hannah?" Nicholas spat out, his voice dripping with venom. "You come in here with your cheap clothes, your big body, and your self-righteous attitude, acting like you're better than all of us! We built this family! We built this empire! Who are you to tear it down?"
"I didn't tear it down, Nicholas," Hannah said softly. "You destroyed yourself the moment you thought money gave you the right to ruin people."
"Roman!" Nicholas turned to his cousin, desperation making his voice shrill. "Roman, listen to me! We can fix this! Don't let her do this to us! If the FBI comes here tonight, the Duca name will be dragged through the mud! The stock will plunge! Think about the family legacy!"
Roman looked at Nicholas with absolute disgust. "You stole from my mother's charity. You tried to frame my wife. You let my mother strike her in front of everyone, and you stood there and watched. You aren't family, Nicholas. You're a parasite."
"Roman, please!"
"Silence!" Roman roared, the power of his voice shaking the crystal chandelier hanging above them.
Just then, a sharp, loud chime rang out from Hannah’s laptop on the library desk. It was followed by a high-pitched, automated notification tone on her mobile phone.
12:00 AM. Midnight.
Hannah picked up her phone, pressed a few buttons, and tapped the speakerphone icon. A crisp, professional female voice with a British accent echoed throughout the silent hall:
"Good evening, Mrs. Duca. This is Director Vance from the International Financial Compliance Unit in London. We have completed the final automated forensic trace for Account 99-Delta."
Hannah looked up at the frozen room. "Go ahead, Director Vance. Please read the final findings for the record."
"The transfer of eight million dollars initiated on Tuesday was successfully intercepted and held in regulatory escrow. The digital signature used was confirmed to be a spoofed hash originating from a secondary device owned by Nicholas Vale. Furthermore, internal records confirm Mr. Vale authorized the liquidation of eight million dollars in foundation assets three months prior to cover private accounts in Singapore and Macao."
Bianca gasped, putting her hands over her mouth as tears finally spilled down her cheeks.
Director Vance continued: "The eight million dollars has been fully restored to the Duca Charitable Foundation account as of midnight. The transaction is cleared, and all regulatory holds on your commercial lines have been lifted. However, pursuant to international financial fraud protocols, an arrest warrant has been formally issued for Nicholas Vale."
"Thank you, Director Vance," Hannah said calmly. "That will be all."
"Pleasure working with you, Mrs. Duca. Goodnight."
The line went dead.
The truth lay bare before the entire Duca family. There were no more excuses, no more doubts, no more clever lies. The eight million dollars was back in the foundation. Hannah was completely innocent—and she had saved them all from total ruin.
Nicholas backed toward the front entrance, his hands trembling as he reached into his coat pocket for his car keys. "You... you'll never catch me," he muttered frantically. "I have cash... I have accounts you don't know about—"
Before he could pull his keys out, the heavy double front doors of the estate burst open.
A icy blast of wind and snow rushed into the foyer, accompanied by four armed, uniformed federal agents and two state police officers.

"Nicholas Vale!" the lead agent announced loudly, unholstering his badge. "FPS Fraud Division! Stand down and put your hands where we can see them!"
Nicholas froze, his key dropping from his lifeless fingers and clattering against the marble floor.
