Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

By 1:30 AM, the emotional storm in the main hall had settled into a quiet, somber calm. Most of the family members had retired to their guest quarters, physically and emotionally exhausted by the night's dramatic events.
Bianca had gone to her private suite, but not before instructing the staff that from this day forward, Hannah’s word in the estate was to be treated with the exact same authority as her own and Roman's.
Downstairs, the estate was quiet. Snow continued to fall gently outside, burying the tire tracks left by the FBI vehicles.
Roman walked into the master bedroom suite where Hannah was standing by the large balcony window, sipping a warm cup of chamomile tea. She had taken off her heavy emerald earrings and released her long dark hair, letting it fall loosely over her shoulders.
Roman closed the door quietly and walked up behind her. He wrapped his strong arms around her waist, pulling her curvy frame tightly against his broad chest, burying his face in the crook of her neck.
He held her so tightly it felt as though he was afraid she might vanish into the snowy night.
"I am so proud of you," Roman whispered, his deep voice vibrating against her skin. "And I am so deeply sorry for what you had to endure in my house tonight."
Hannah rested her hands over his arms, leaning back against him comfortably. "You defended me, Roman. You stood up to your mother before you even knew the truth. That was all I ever needed."
Roman turned her gently in his arms so he was looking directly into her brown eyes. He reached up, his large hand softly cradling the side of her face where the red mark had finally begun to fade.
"My mother will spend the rest of her life trying to make this up to you," Roman said grimly. "And as for Nicholas... my legal team will ensure he faces the absolute maximum sentence possible under the law. No one hurts my wife and gets away with it."
"He destroyed himself, Roman," Hannah said softly. "Greed always catches up with people eventually."
Roman looked at her with pure, unadulterated adoration. "You saved everything tonight, Hannah. Not just the money, not just the foundation. You saved my family from destroying itself from the inside out. How did I get so lucky to have a woman like you?"
May you like
Hannah smiled, a warm, beautiful expression that lit up her entire face. "You didn't get lucky, Roman. You just picked the right accountant."
Roman laughed—a deep, genuine sound that broke the last lingering traces of tension from the night. He bent his head down and kissed her deeply, passionately, sealing the bond between them that no family drama, no stolen millions, and no cruel lies could ever break.
