Chapter 5 - The Countdown

The silence in the grand hall was so thick you could hear the crackle of the dying fire and the howling winter wind outside.

Nicholas tried to laugh, but the sound was thin, dry, and hollow. "This is... this is insane. Roman, you can't possibly believe this fairy tale! She's a master at manipulating numbers! She's setting me up to save her own skin!"

Roman didn't answer immediately. He looked down at the silver flash drive sitting on the glass table, then looked at his wife. "Hannah, if you moved the money to a secure escrow account to protect the family, why didn't you tell me three days ago? Why wait until Christmas dinner in front of everyone?"

"Because Nicholas didn't work alone," Hannah revealed, her voice echoing through the silent room.

A gasp rippled through the gathered relatives.

"What?" Uncle Thomas demanded. "What are you saying?"

"Nicholas needed high-level access keys that only three people possess," Hannah explained, her voice steady and precise. "I have my key, Roman has his, and Bianca has hers. Three days ago, someone used Bianca's master encryption key to authorize the secondary bypass protocol. If I had raised the alarm internally before the Swiss regulatory commission completed their independent forensic trace, the co-conspirator would have wiped the server logs and destroyed the paper trail, leaving me as the sole scapegoat."

Bianca’s eyes widened in utter disbelief. "My... my key? I never gave my key to anyone! I keep it in my safe!"

"You didn't give it to him, Aunt Bianca," Hannah said softly, her tone shifting from accusatory to strangely compassionate. "He stole it from your private study during the Thanksgiving dinner last month."

"You lying bitch!" Nicholas suddenly erupted, abandoning his polished persona. He pointed an angry, trembling finger at Hannah. "You're pulling things out of thin air! You've hated this family since the day Roman brought you home! You've always looked down on us, judging us with your little accounting degree!"

"Shut your mouth, Nicholas," Roman said, his voice dropping to a dangerous, deadly register. He took a single step toward his cousin, his tall frame casting a massive, intimidating shadow over him. "If you raise your voice at my wife one more time, I won't wait for midnight to deal with you."

Nicholas backed up a step, his chest heaving, his eyes darting frantically toward the front door of the estate.

"It's 11:50 PM," Hannah announced calmly, looking at the grandfather clock. "Ten minutes left."

"Ten minutes until what?" Marcus asked, his voice shaking.

"Ten minutes until the Swiss Federal Banking Commission finishes processing the final forensic clearance," Hannah replied. "When that clock strikes midnight, the eight million dollars will be automatically returned to the foundation's primary account, completely intact. And simultaneously, an international arrest warrant will be transmitted directly to the Federal Bureau of Investigation for grand larceny, wire fraud, and identity theft."

Nicholas’s face drained of all color. He backed away another step, his eyes wide with rising panic.

"You... you called the FBI?" Uncle Thomas asked, horrified. "On family?"

"I called the authorities to stop a thief who was about to sink Roman’s entire business empire to cover his own gambling debts," Hannah said coldly. "Nicholas didn't just lose eight million in Asia. He owes over fifteen million dollars to an offshore syndicate. If he didn't replace that money by tonight, they were going to expose the foundation's fraudulent balance sheet to the press tomorrow morning. He was going to let Roman, Bianca, and the entire family take the fall while he fled the country."

Bianca turned slowly to look at her nephew. "Nicholas... is this true?"

Nicholas didn't answer. His eyes were darting frantically between Roman, the front doors, and the snowstorm outside.

"Nicholas!" Bianca screamed, her voice cracking with emotional anguish. "Answer me!"
