Chapter 1 - The Shadows at the Gate

The late morning sun filtered through the sheer curtains of the Hunt family kitchen, casting long, fractured shadows across the tiled floor. Outside, the engine of the black sedan rumbled softly before cutting out entirely. A heavy silence settled over the quiet suburban neighborhood, punctuated only by the distinct, measured steps of three men approaching the front porch.

Camille stood behind the glass kitchen door, her arm protectively extending to keep her mother, Diane, behind her. Nadia shifted subtly to her left, reaching instinctively for the heavy brass candleholder sitting on the side table. The man leading the group moved with a terrifyingly effortless authority. His charcoal suit was tailored impeccably, hugging broad shoulders and a lean frame that spoke of discipline rather than mere athletics. His dark hair was combed back neatly, revealing a sharp, angular jawline framed by stubble, and eyes so intensely dark they seemed to absorb the light around them.

He stopped just short of the porch steps, keeping his hands loosely at his sides. The two men behind him remained a step down, their eyes scanning the perimeter of the driveway with practiced, lethal vigilance.

"Camille Hunt?" the man asked again. His voice was deep, resonant, and entirely stripped of urgency.

"I asked you who you are," Camille replied, her voice holding firm despite the cold dread knotting in her stomach. "You're trespassing on private property."

The man did not look offended. A subtle, fleeting curve appeared at the corner of his mouth before disappearing just as quickly. "My name is Lucian Vane. And while I apologize for the intrusion on what was meant to be your wedding day, I assure you my presence here is far from trivial."

Nadia stepped closer to the glass. "Vane? As in Vane Enterprises?"

Lucian did not look at Nadia. His dark eyes remained fixed entirely on Camille. "That is the corporate facade, yes. But I suspect you are more interested in the reason Trevor Ames fled your home at four o'clock this morning."

Diane gasped behind Camille, her hand flying to her chest. "You... you know where Trevor is?"

"I know where he is trying to go," Lucian corrected smoothly. "And more importantly, I know what he took with him. May I come inside, Miss Hunt? Or would you prefer your neighbors hear the details of your former fiancé's debts?"

Camille looked at Lucian's face. There was no theatrical cruelty in his demeanor, no obvious threat in his posture. That was what made him terrifying. He carried himself like a man who owned every room he walked into, simply because no one had ever lived long enough to prove him wrong.

"Just you," Camille said firmly, stepping back to unlock the door. "Your men stay outside."

"Camille, no!" Diane whispered frantically, pulling at her daughter's sleeve. "We don't know who these people are."

"He knows why Trevor ran, Mom," Camille said, keeping her gaze locked on Lucian. "And right now, that is the only thing I care about."

Lucian offered a slight, approving nod. He gestured with his index finger to his two guards, who immediately stepped back toward the gate to watch the street. Lucian wiped his polished shoes on the doormat and stepped over the threshold, bringing with him the subtle scent of expensive cedar, faint tobacco, and cold rain.

He walked into the foyer, his eyes taking in the abandoned decorations—the white ribbons tied to the banister, the boxes of unused place cards, and the faint scent of wilting garden roses.

"A pity," Lucian remarked softly, his voice echoing in the hallway. "A grand wedding, ruined by a foolish boy's miscalculations."

"He isn't a boy," Camille said, pulling the thermal paper ultrasound from her pocket and laying it flat on the hall table. "He's a thirty-two-year-old man who got another woman pregnant while planning to marry me. Unless you're here to tell me you're Mara Radcliffe's legal counsel, you're in the wrong house."

Lucian walked over to the table. He did not pick up the ultrasound. He simply stared down at the gray image with a look of profound, icy disgust.

"Mara Radcliffe is not pregnant, Miss Hunt," Lucian said plainly.

Camille froze. Nadia, who had followed them into the hallway, let out a sharp breath. "What did you just say?"

Lucian finally turned his full attention to Camille. "The image you hold in your hand is a fake. A high-resolution digital printout purchased from a gray-market medical clinic in downtown Chicago three weeks ago."

Camille felt the room tilt slightly. "Why... why would he carry a fake ultrasound?"

"Because Trevor didn't leave it in his coat pocket for you to find by accident," Lucian replied, taking a step closer. "He wanted you to break off the wedding. He needed an excuse to disappear before sunrise that wouldn't involve me tracking him down through his family."

May you like

"I don't understand," Camille whispered, her mind racing back to Trevor's panicked expression from the night before. His sudden confession, his weak excuses, his complete lack of defense. He hadn't been defending himself—he had been facilitating his own escape. "Why would he want to run from his own wedding?"

Lucian leaned in slightly, his dark eyes reflecting the warm hallway light. "Because three months ago, Trevor Ames embezzled four point two million dollars from an off-shore account belonging to my organization. And Mara Radcliffe isn't his mistress, Miss Hunt. She is his handler."
