Chapter 6 - The Glass Tower

The private elevator rose silently to the top floor of the Vane Tower in downtown Chicago. The doors slid open to reveal a massive pent house apartment with floor-to-ceiling glass walls overlooking the glowing skyline of the city under the night sky.
Camille walked out onto the polished marble floor, holding a crystal glass containing two fingers of aged bourbon. She had changed into a dry, elegant silk blouse and dark trousers provided by one of Lucian's personal stylists at his hotel suite downstairs.
Lucian stood by the glass wall, his suit jacket removed, his dark shirt unbuttoned at the collar, revealing the strong lines of his neck. He held his own glass, looking out at the city light reflection.
"You handled yourself remarkably well tonight," Lucian remarked, turning to face her. "Most people in your position would have collapsed under the weight of such revelations."
"I spent my whole life being taught that stability comes from following the rules," Camille said, walking over to stand beside him at the window. "You go to school, you find a good man, you plan a wedding, you build a home. But tonight I realized that rules are just things weak men use to hide their lies until someone stronger comes along."
Lucian let out a low, appreciative hum. "A very cynical view for a woman who was hours away from saying vows."
"A realistic view," she corrected, taking a slow sip of the bourbon. The warmth burned pleasantly down her throat. "What about you, Lucian? What do you believe in?"
"Control," Lucian replied without hesitation. "The world is chaotic, Camille. People lie, promises break, and systems fail. The only thing that remains constant is power and the willingness to exercise it to protect what belongs to you."
Camille looked at him sideways. "And what belongs to you?"
Lucian turned his body toward her, taking a small step closer. His dark eyes locked onto hers with an intensity that made her breath catch in her throat.
"My business," Lucian murmured. "My city. And anyone I choose to bring under my protection."
"Is that what I am now?" Camille asked softly, stepping closer to him, refusing to yield to his imposing presence. "Under your protection?"
"You walked into an airfield with me, helped me secure four million dollars, and watched your fiancé get dragged away without shedding a single tear," Lucian said, his voice dropping into a deep, velvety register. "You are far too dangerous to be left unprotected, Miss Hunt."
Camille felt a sudden, electric tension rise between them. It wasn't the polite, comfortable affection she had shared with Trevor. This was something dark, magnetic, and undeniably dangerous. Lucian Vane was a man who operated in the shadows, a man who commanded fear—yet standing next to him, Camille felt safer than she ever had in her life.
"I need to go back to Nashville tomorrow," Camille said, though her voice lacked conviction. "I have a life to rebuild."
"Do you?" Lucian asked, raising one dark eyebrow. "A quiet suburban life in a house where every corner reminds you of a liar? Working a quiet job, pretending tonight never happened?"
He reached out, his long fingers gently lifting her chin so she was forced to look directly into his eyes. His touch was warm, precise, and surprisingly gentle.
"You don't belong in that quiet world anymore, Camille," Lucian whispered. "You proved that tonight."
Camille looked into his eyes, feeling the truth of his words settle deep in her soul. The innocent, trusting woman who had hung a white silk dress in her childhood bedroom was gone. In her place stood someone who had looked into the abyss and hadn't blinked.
"What are you offering me, Lucian?" she asked, her breath brushing against his lips.
"A choice," Lucian replied. "Go back to your old life tomorrow and forget my name. Or stay in Chicago. Learn how my world works. Let me show you what real power looks like."
May you like
Camille didn't pull away from his touch. She leaned into it slightly, her eyes glowing under the city lights.
"I've already forgotten his name," she whispered. "Tell me more about your world."
