Chapter 9 - The Dockside Confrontation

The air at the South Southside docks was thick with the smell of salt water, diesel exhaust, and rust. Rain slicked the concrete as four black SUVs pulled into the shadows of Warehouse 12.

Lucian stepped out first, followed closely by Camille. Eight armed men fell into formation behind them, their weapons concealed beneath long dark coats.

Inside the sprawling, high-ceilinged warehouse, crates of high-value electronics were stacked thirty feet high. Standing near the center of the bay were five men, led by a heavy-set man in his late fifties with graying hair and an expensive leather coat—Dominic Moretti.

"Lucian," Dominic called out, his voice echoing off the corrugated metal walls. "You're slipping. Your security team at the gate barely put up a fight."

Lucian walked into the center of the warehouse, stopping twenty feet from Dominic. Camille walked right beside him, her hand casually resting inside her jacket pocket, her fingers wrapped around the cold handle of the black pistol.

"You're old, Dominic," Lucian said calmly, his hands resting in his trouser pockets. "Old men make desperate moves when they realize their time is passed. Stealing two crates of computer components won't rebuild your failing family."

Dominic sneered, his eyes shifting toward Camille. "Who's the girl, Lucian? A new secretary? Or did you bring another victim from that Ames mess?"

"She is the Executive Director of Vane Logistics," Lucian stated, his voice carrying an absolute, crushing authority. "And the person who currently controls every shipping lane your family uses to supply your illegal casinos in Michigan."

Dominic's smile faltered slightly. He looked closer at Camille, recognizing the sharp, fearless glare in her eyes.

"She redirected your freight lines three hours ago, Dominic," Camille spoke up, her voice clear and cutting through the quiet warehouse. "As of midnight, every shipment belonging to Moretti Enterprises bound for Detroit has been impounded by federal customs authorities under suspected contraband warrants."

Dominic's face turned crimson with rage. "You little bitch—"

He reached toward his coat, but before his hand could slip inside, Lucian moved with terrifying speed. In a fraction of a second, Lucian pulled a weapon from his holster and fired a single, deafening shot.

The bullet struck the concrete floor inches from Dominic's boots, sending sparks flying into the air. The four men behind Dominic froze, their hands hovering nervously over their weapons as Lucian's guards drew their arms in perfect unison.

"Step back, Dominic," Lucian warned, his voice dropping into a lethal whisper. "You leave this warehouse tonight on foot. Your assets in Chicago are seized. Your routes are mine. If I see you or your men on my side of the state line again, I won't aim for the floor."

Dominic stared at Lucian, then at Camille, who hadn't even flinched when the gun fired. She stood her ground, her eyes cold and unwavering.

Realizing he was completely outmatched, outmaneuvered, and financially crippled, Dominic raised his hands slowly. "This isn't over, Vane."

"It is," Camille countered smoothly. "For you, it ended the moment you stepped into my warehouse."

Dominic turned and walked out the side exit, his men following him like whipped dogs into the rainy night.
