Chapter 7 - The New Alliance

Three days later, the news of Trevor Ames's sudden arrest dominated the financial pages of the Chicago Tribune. The official report cited an extensive federal investigation into corporate embezzlement, international money laundering, and tax fraud. Ames & Holden was dismantled by federal auditors, its assets seized, and its remaining partners dragged into depositions.

In Nashville, the Hunt family name remained completely untarnished.

Diane Hunt sat in her sunroom, reading a official letter from the state prosecutor's office confirming that her family was entirely cleared of any connection to Trevor's financial crimes. Nadia sat beside her, sipping coffee and looking at her phone.

"She's not coming back this week," Nadia said softly, showing Diane a text message from Camille.

Diane looked up, her face a mixture of relief and deep concern. "Is she safe, Nadia? She's staying in Chicago with that man."

"She's more than safe, Diane," Nadia replied with a faint, knowing smile. "She's in charge."

In downtown Chicago, inside the high-ceilinged boardroom of Vane Enterprises, Camille sat at the long mahogany table opposite Lucian's chief legal counsel. She wore a tailored black suit, her dark hair pinned back elegantly, a tablet open in front of her containing the corporate structures of Ames's liquidated shipping routes.

Over the past seventy-two hours, Camille had worked alongside Lucian's financial team, using her knowledge of Trevor's personal habits and corporate logistics to help identify three secondary hidden accounts in the Cayman Islands that federal agents had missed.

She had recovered an additional seven hundred thousand dollars for Lucian's firm.

Lucian walked into the boardroom, leaning over her shoulder to look down at the screen. The scent of cedar and fine wool enveloped her immediately.

"The federal court finalized the asset transfer twenty minutes ago," Lucian said, his hand resting lightly on the back of her chair. "The shipping routes are officially under Vane Logistics control."

"And Trevor?" Camille asked without looking up.

"Sentenced to eighteen years without possibility of early parole," Lucian replied smoothly. "He requested a meeting with you yesterday through his public defender."

Camille finally turned her head, looking up at Lucian. "Did he?"

"I declined on your behalf," Lucian said, a subtle, possessive gleam in his dark eyes. "I assumed you had no interest in visiting a prison in Southern Illinois."

"Correct," Camille said, a cold smile appearing on her face. She closed the tablet and stood up, stepping into his space. "What's our next project?"

Lucian looked down at her, his expression softening into something remarkably close to admiration. "Our next project, Miss Hunt, is dinner. My personal driver is waiting downstairs."

"A business dinner?" she teased gently.

"No," Lucian murmured, reaching out to tuck a stray lock of dark hair behind her ear. "A celebration. Of a partnership that began with a lie and ended with a kingdom."

Camille looked up at the man who had walked into her life on the worst night of her existence. He was a mafia boss, a man feared by cities and hunted by enemies. But to her, he was the architect of her freedom.

"Lead the way, Lucian," Camille said, taking his offered arm.

As they walked together toward the private elevator, the white silk dress sitting in a dark closet in Nashville felt a million miles away. Camille Hunt had found her place not at an altar of quiet promises, but beside a man who built empires in the dark. And as the elevator doors closed, she knew she was never going back.
