Chapter 2 - The Anatomy of a Lie

The silence in the hallway felt heavy enough to crush. Diane sank onto the bottom step of the staircase, weeping quietly into her hands, while Nadia stood stunned beside the doorway. Camille, however, felt a strange, cold calm wash over her. The betrayal hadn't shrunk; it had expanded into something vast, dangerous, and completely alien to the quiet life she had built.
"An off-shore account," Camille repeated, her voice steady despite the rapid pounding of her heart. "Trevor works in commercial logistics. He handles regional shipping routes."
"That is his official title at Ames & Holden," Lucian agreed, folding his hands behind his back. "Unbeknownst to you, his firm was contracted to handle discrete logistics for several of my subsidiaries. Over the past eighteen months, your fiancé used his access to redirect high-value shipments through international ports, laundering the proceeds into private accounts in Panama."
Camille looked at the ultrasound lying on the table. The small gray shape that had broken her heart fourteen hours ago was nothing more than a prop in a theater of fraud.
"He lied about Chicago," she realized aloud. "He wasn't visiting an old girlfriend."
"He was meeting with Mara Radcliffe to finalize the purchase of forged passports and clean identities," Lucian said. "He intended to marry you today, leverage your father's clean financial background to clear his remaining local assets, and then leave you behind to face the federal investigators when my firm reported the theft."
Camille felt a sudden, sickening wave of anger rise in her chest. It wasn't sadness anymore. It was pure, burning fury. "He was going to frame my family."
"He was going to use your family as a human shield," Lucian corrected smoothly. "If he married you today, your personal accounts would have been entangled in his assets. When my men came to collect, or when the authorities stepped in, you and your father would have taken the brunt of the financial freezing. Meanwhile, Trevor would have been on a private charter out of Midway Airport with four million dollars."
Nadia took a step toward Lucian. "If you knew all this, why didn't you stop him earlier? Why let it get to the night before the wedding?"
Lucian turned his gaze to Nadia, his eyes narrowing slightly. "Because Trevor was useful to me until he decided to steal from me. And I do not interrupt a thief until I am certain where he has hidden the money."
He turned back to Camille. "Last night, when you confronted him with that thermal paper, you disrupted his timeline. He panicked. He assumed you would call off the wedding immediately, exposing him to your family before he could finish moving the funds. So he packed what he could and ran early."
"Where is he?" Camille demanded, her eyes locking onto Lucian's. "Where did he go?"
"My men tracked his vehicle to a private hangar outside Gary, Indiana," Lucian said. "He is currently attempting to board a flight to Belize. But he cannot transfer the final portion of the stolen funds without a secondary verification key."
Lucian reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, sleek black USB drive. He placed it gently beside the fake ultrasound.
"Which he left hidden inside the lining of your bridal trunk," Lucian finished. "He meant to retrieve it before leaving for the church today."
Camille looked at the drive, then up at the dangerous man standing in her hallway. "You didn't come here just to tell me the truth, did you, Mr. Vane?"
"No," Lucian admitted, a cold, calculating look entering his dark eyes. "I came here because Trevor Ames took something that belongs to me. And while I have no interest in harming an innocent woman whose only crime was poor judgment in men, I require that drive. And I require your cooperation to ensure he does not escape."
"Cooperation?" Camille laughed bitterly. "I don't know anything about his accounts. I don't know anything about your business."
"You don't need to," Lucian said, taking half a step closer, his tall frame looming over her. "Trevor believes you are currently crying in your bedroom, broken-hearted and disgraced. He does not know I am standing in your hallway. He does not know you have the key."
He extended his hand toward her. "Come with me to Chicago, Miss Hunt. Help me bait him into the open. In exchange, I will ensure your family's name is completely cleared, his theft is scrubbed from your father's records, and Trevor Ames pays every single cent of his debt to both of us."
Camille looked down at Lucian's extended hand. Her life as she knew it had ended the moment she opened that coat pocket. She could stay here, in this house, crying over white silk dresses and answering pitying phone calls from one hundred and forty-seven wedding guests.
Or she could go with the syndicate boss and watch the man who tried to destroy her burn.

She didn't hesitate. She stepped past the ultrasound and placed her hand in Lucian's.
"Get your coat, Mr. Vane," Camille said softly. "Let's go find my groom."
