Chapter 8 - Shadows over the Empire

Two months later, the transition from Camille Hunt, the suburban bride, to Camille Hunt, the executive director of Vane Logistics, was complete. She had taken over the regional distribution network that Trevor had once managed, restructuring its security protocols and turning it into one of the most profitable subsidiaries under the Vane Enterprises umbrella.
Sitting in her glass-walled office on the forty-fifth floor of Vane Tower, Camille reviewed a stack of customs manifests. Her posture was commanding, her authority unquestioned by the dozens of senior managers who now reported directly to her.
A soft knock sounded at her door before Lucian walked in. He wore a crisp dark grey suit, his tie loosened slightly, a rare look of contemplation on his sharp features.
"You're working late," Lucian noted, walking over to lean against the edge of her desk.
"The new Rotterdam shipments are clearing customs tonight," Camille said, setting her pen down. "I wanted to make sure the verification keys were locked down personally."
Lucian reached out, placing his hand over hers on the desk. His touch was warm, an anchor in the high-stakes environment they navigated daily. "You've done remarkable work, Camille. My captains respect you. That is not an easy thing to earn in my line of work."
"I don't care about their respect, Lucian," she said, looking up at him with a light smirk. "I care about their efficiency."
Lucian let out a deep, quiet laugh. "A true Vane."
Before she could reply, the secure phone on Lucian's belt vibrated sharply. The relaxed atmosphere in the room vanished instantly. Lucian picked up the phone, his eyes narrowing as he listened to the voice on the other end.
"Speak," Lucian commanded flatly.
A brief, tense pause followed. Camille watched his face darken, the dangerous, predatory aura that had drawn her to him on the night of her canceled wedding returning in full force.
"Where?" Lucian asked coldly. "Understood. Lock down the perimeter. I'm on my way."
He ended the call and looked at Camille.
"What happened?" she asked, standing up from her chair.
"A rival outfit from Detroit—the Moretti family—just attempted to hijack one of our secondary warehouses near the docks," Lucian said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, icy register. "They believe that with the recent legal scrutiny following Trevor's arrest, my organization is vulnerable."
Camille didn't look frightened. She walked around the desk, stopping directly in front of him. "Are we vulnerable?"
Lucian looked down at her, a dark, dangerous spark igniting in his eyes. "The Moretti family is about to learn that taking from me is a fatal mistake."
He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, sleek matte-black handgun, placing it gently into her hand.
"Come with me," Lucian murmured. "It's time you saw how we deal with real threats."
May you like
Camille looked at the weight of the weapon in her palm, then up at Lucian. She pulled the slide back with practiced efficiency, checking the chamber, before slipping it into her jacket pocket.
"Let's go," she said simply.
