Chapter 2 - The Fall of the House of Ashcroft

"Bolt cutters! Get the bolt cutters down here now!" Adrian bellowed, his voice echoing through the vaulted stone chamber with the force of a command that admitted no refusal.

Two tactical medics slid down beside us, their black emergency bags popping open instantly. One applied a neck brace to stabilize me while the other cut through my torn sleeve to attach an IV line and a portable fetal monitor.

"Pulse is high, blood pressure is spiking," the medic called out to his partner. "We need to clear the field and get her to the trauma transport immediately. Fetal heart rate is fast, but it’s present."

Hearing that tiny, rapid thump-thump-thump from the portable monitor was like air returning to my lungs. I closed my eyes, a tear finally tracking through the coal dust on my cheek. He was still alive. My baby was still fighting.

A sharp CLANG echoed as a federal officer severed the iron chain around my waist. Adrian picked me up into his arms as if I weighed nothing, stepping away from the iron furnace.

Lucinda was pressed against the stone wall, her wrists bound tightly behind her back in zip-ties held by a female FBI agent. Her expensive diamond earrings were crooked, her hair ruined by plaster dust, but her eyes were still burning with venom.

"Adrian!" Lucinda barked, trying to straighten her spine despite her restraint. "What is the meaning of this treason? You brought federal officers into your ancestral home? For her? She’s an auditor! A common criminal who was trying to extort our trust!"

Adrian stopped. He didn't look at her face. He looked at the red smear on her palm—my blood.

"You slapped her," Adrian said. His voice was terrifyingly low, completely stripped of emotion. "You chained her to a furnace while she was carrying my child."

"She was going to destroy this family!" Lucinda shouted, her voice echoing into the upper hallways where the sounds of shrieking party guests and shouting agents could be heard. "She spent three months pulling apart our accounts! She uncovered the offshore entities! If she leaves this house alive, the Ashcroft name is finished!"

"The Ashcroft name was finished the day you and Marcus turned the foundation into a money laundering front for human traffickers," Adrian replied coldly.

He looked over at Marcus, who was being hauled to his feet by two federal agents. Marcus’s lip was bleeding, his suit ruined.

"Adrian, please!" Marcus whimpered, his eyes wide with fear. "It was Lucinda’s idea! She told me if I didn't get Maya to sign the non-disclosure agreements, she would cut me out of the estate! I didn't mean to push her down the stairs—she tripped!"

"Save it for the grand jury, Marcus," said a sharp, authoritative voice from the stairs.

Assistant United States Attorney Victoria Chen descended the steps, holding a secure tablet displaying a live federal search warrant. Behind her were four forensic accountants carrying digital imaging units.

"Don Vieri—I mean, Mr. Ashcroft," Victoria corrected herself smoothly, catching herself before using Adrian’s security moniker. "We have secured the upper floors. All two hundred guests are currently being held in the ballroom for identity verification. We’ve seized the server rooms in the west wing."

Lucinda’s jaw dropped. "Server rooms? You can't touch those! Those are private family records!"

"Those are the secondary ledgers for the Ashcroft Overseas Holding Trust," I said from Adrian’s arms, turning my head to look at Lucinda. "The ones you thought you encrypted with a triple-layer cipher. I decrypted them from my laptop in the guest room two hours before Marcus threw me down the stairs."

Lucinda stared at me, the final realization dawning behind her eyes. She hadn't been dealing with a helpless victim. She had been dealing with the architect of her complete annihilation.

"You..." Lucinda whispered, her voice failing her. "You planned this."

"I came here to give you a chance to surrender the funds quietly, Lucinda," I said, cold satisfaction cutting through my physical pain. "Adrian asked me to give you an out. He wanted to believe his mother was just greedy, not evil. But you proved what you were when you tried to buy my child for five hundred thousand dollars."

"Get them out of my sight," Adrian ordered the agents.

"Adrian! You can't do this to me! I am your mother!" Lucinda screamed as the agents began dragging her up the stone steps. Her heels scraped helplessly against the floor. "I built this empire for you! Adrian!"

Her screams faded as they pulled her into the upper estate, leaving only the sound of the fetal monitor's rhythmic ticking.

"Medics, let's move!" the lead agent called out. "Helicopter is holding on the south lawn!"

Adrian carried me out of the cellar, up the grand marble staircase that was now littered with shattered glass, zip-tied socialites, and federal officers in tactical gear. The wealthy elite of Milan and New York, who had gathered to drink champagne and bid on stolen art, watched in stunned silence as the Don of Vantage Shield carried his blood-stained, six-month-pregnant wife past them into the freezing night air.
