Chapter 3 - Sanctum

The private trauma bay at St. Jude’s Medical Center was completely locked down. Four Vantage Shield operatives in dark suits stood guard at the double doors of the ICU, allowing no one inside without biometric verification.

Inside the room, the lights were dimmed. The quiet hum of medical monitors provided a soothing rhythmic background.

I lay in the hospital bed, an IV line feeding fluids into my left arm, a complex monitoring harness wrapped around my stomach. The deep cut on my temple had been closed with six delicate stitches, and my wrists were wrapped in soft white bandages where the iron chain had chafed the skin.

The head of obstetrics, Dr. Aris, stepped away from the ultrasound screen with a gentle, reassuring smile.

"The placental barrier is intact, Mrs. Ashcroft," Dr. Aris said, wiping the clear gel from my abdomen. "Your baby boy is remarkably resilient. He suffered no structural trauma from the fall. The bleeding was caused by a minor cervical irritation from the physical stress, which has completely stopped."

A massive weight lifted off my chest, and I let out a breath I felt like I had been holding since I hit the stone steps. "He's really okay?"

"He’s fighting like an Ashcroft," Dr. Aris said, casting a respectful glance toward Adrian, who was standing at the side of the bed, his hand gripping mine so tightly his knuckles were white. "However, you require absolute bed rest for the next three weeks. No stress, no travel, and certainly no chasing corrupt trustees."

"Understood, Doctor. Thank you," Adrian said, his voice deep and raspy.

Once the medical team gathered their equipment and quietly exited the room, closing the heavy soundproof door behind them, the silence in the room became profound.

Adrian didn't sit down. He remained standing beside the bed, staring down at my bandaged wrists. He had removed his suit jacket, rolling his white shirt sleeves up to his elbows, revealing the faint scars on his arms from his former life in tactical security.

"You knew," Adrian said softly.

I looked at him. "Knew what?"

"You knew Marcus and Lucinda were planning to corner you tonight," Adrian said, his eyes darkening with a mixture of guilt and pain. "You knew they were moving the offshore funds into the basement vault during the auction. That’s why you didn't wait for my team to arrive from Zurich."

"If I had waited, they would have transferred the forty-eight million to the Cayman accounts at midnight," I replied quietly. "The paper trail would have gone cold. We needed Lucinda on tape attempting to destroy the physical evidence."

"You used yourself as bait, Maya!" Adrian’s voice cracked, a sudden flash of raw, agonizing anger breaking through his composure. He slammed his hand against the side rail of the bed—not hard, but with enough force to show the tempest raging inside him. "You put yourself and our son in front of a monster!"

"I didn't expect Marcus to push me down the stairs, Adrian!" I snapped back, my own anger flaring up to meet his. "I thought they would try to bribe me again! I thought I had ten minutes before your team breached the perimeter!"

"Ten minutes was almost enough time for her to kill you!" Adrian stepped closer, dropping to his knees beside the bed so his eyes were level with mine. Tears glistened in his gray eyes—a sight I had never seen in all the months I had known him. "Do you have any idea what it felt like? Standing in that command helicopter, listening to her slap you through the watch audio? Listening to you count down from ten while I was trapped six hundred feet in the air?"

I looked at his face—at the dark circles under his eyes, the terror etched into every line of his features. The anger drained out of me, replaced by a profound, aching warmth.

I reached out my hand, my bandaged fingers gently touching his jawline. "I knew you were coming, Adrian. I didn't panic because I knew your voice was on the other side of that watch. I knew you would break down the doors."

Adrian closed his eyes, leaning his face into my palm, breathing in the scent of hospital soap and my skin. "I almost lost everything, Maya. The money, the foundation, the family name... none of it matters. If I lost you and the baby, I would have burned this entire city to the ground."

"You don't have to burn anything," I whispered, sliding my fingers up to stroke his dark hair. "We won. The foundation is safe. Lucinda and Marcus are in federal custody. And our son is right here."

He reached down, laying his palm flat against my belly. As if responding to his father's touch, the baby gave a sudden, firm kick against his hand.

Adrian froze, a look of pure, unadulterated wonder spreading across his face. A breathless, tearful laugh escaped his lips.

"He’s strong," Adrian whispered, pressing his forehead gently against my stomach. "He's so strong."

"He has his father's stubbornness," I murmured, smiling.

The door to the ICU room opened silently, and Victoria Chen stepped inside carrying a secure tablet. She stopped when she saw the quiet moment between us, clearing her throat politely.

"I apologize for interrupting, Don Vieri," Victoria said, "but the federal magistrate just signed the formal indictments. Lucinda and Marcus are being held without bail at the Metropolitan Detention Center. But we have a problem."

May you like

Adrian stood up slowly, the soft father instantly vanishing, replaced once again by the ruthless head of Vantage Shield. "What problem?"

"Lucinda’s defense attorney just filed an emergency motion," Victoria said, her face grim. "She isn't claiming innocence. She’s claiming you fabricated the entire event using private military forces... and she just activated the secondary trust clause."
