Chapter 6 - The Breach at the Annex

The digital battlefield on my monitors was a storm of accelerating red and blue data blocks.
Every second, the defense algorithm deployed by Lucinda’s high-priced attorney threw new cryptographic barriers in front of my audit key. The server temperature in the basement of Vantage Shield was rising, the cooling fans roaring like jet engines through the floorboards.
"Time remaining: thirty-one minutes," the technician reported. "Our satellite link is at forty-two percent stability! We’re losing data packets!"
"Reroute the secondary signal through our secure server in Milan," I commanded, my hands moving in a rhythm that had become second nature through years of high-stakes financial forensic work. "Isolate the attorney's IP address and flood his local router with a diagnostic loop!"
"He’s pushing back!" Victoria shouted, watching her terminal. "He’s trying to execute an emergency wipe of the local server!"
"If he wipes the server, he wipes the proof of Lucinda’s direct orders!" I said, my teeth grinding together. "Hold the connection!"
Over the tactical comms speaker on Adrian’s console, the chaotic audio of Tactical Team Alpha’s operation suddenly burst through the room.
“Alpha in position outside the Ashcroft Annex. Third floor corner office. Windows are tinted, heavy security door detected.”
"No finesse, Team Alpha," Adrian ordered into his microphone, his gray eyes locked onto the live GPS map of the financial district. "Use thermal charges. Get inside that room."
“Copy that, Don Vieri. Detonation in three... two... one—”
A sharp BOOM echoed through the comms, followed by the shattering of heavy glass and the shouting of armed operatives.
“FEDERAL AGENTS! DROP THE MOUSE! PUT YOUR HANDS ON YOUR HEAD!”
On my central monitor, the red wave of counter-attacks instantly froze.
A moment later, the IP address originating from the Ashcroft Annex went completely dark.
“Target secured,” the team leader reported over the radio. “We have Lucinda’s lead attorney pinned to the floor. He was midway through entering a secondary authorization code. Server has been isolated and seized intact.”
The command room erupted into cheers. Victoria let out a massive sigh of relief, dropping back into her chair.
"The counter-attack is down!" I called out, my fingers flying across the keys to capitalize on the opening. "Re-establishing full satellite connection to Zurich! Audit key integration at eighty-five percent... ninety percent... ninety-nine percent..."
With a soft electronic chime, my main screen turned brilliant emerald green.
VON SACHS PRIVATE VAULT: SEIZED AND FROZEN BY FEDERAL AUDIT PROTOCOL.
Lines of financial data began downloading rapidly onto my secure drive—complete, unredacted records detailing every dollar, every offshore shell company, and every corrupt politician Lucinda Ashcroft had bribed over the last twenty years.
The forty-eight million dollars in stolen charitable funds was completely locked, safe from liquidation, and ready to be returned to the hospitals and orphanages from which it had been taken.
I leaned back in my chair, my body aching with exhaustion, but a profound, triumph-filled warmth spreading through my chest.
Adrian walked over to my chair. Without caring that thirty specialists and federal prosecutors were watching, he leaned down, cupped my face in his large hands, and kissed me deeply, his lips warm and full of boundless pride.
"You did it, my love," Adrian whispered against my lips. "You completely destroyed them."
"We destroyed them," I corrected gently, holding his wrists. "Together."
Victoria stood up, holding her secure phone. "I just spoke with the United States Attorney. With these decrypted ledgers, Lucinda, Marcus, and their entire legal network are facing federal racketeering charges, money laundering, and attempted murder. There will be no bail. There will be no plea deal."
She looked at me with deep respect. "Mrs. Ashcroft... you just pulled off the most successful forensic seizure in the history of the Justice Department."
May you like
"I'm not Mrs. Ashcroft," I said, looking up into Adrian’s eyes with a brilliant, unapologetic smile.
Adrian smiled back—a beautiful, rare smile that lit up his entire face. "She's Mrs. Vieri."
