Chapter 2 - The Emergency Room

The red emergency room lights cast a harsh, rhythmic flash across the white ambulance walls as it sped toward Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

Adrien sat in the back of the vehicle, his tailored suit jacket ruined, holding Grace’s pale, trembling hand. Beside him, the paramedics worked frantically, hooking up monitors and checking fetal heart rates.

"Hang in there, Grace," Adrien urged, his voice rough with an emotion he rarely showed. "We're almost there."

Grace opened her eyes slowly, her lips dry. "My baby..."

"The doctors are going to take care of you both," Adrien promised, squeezing her fingers gently. "Just breathe."

Behind the ambulance, a sleek black sedan followed at a distance. Inside sat Vanessa Cole, her eyes glued to the road, her cell phone pressed tightly to her ear.

"It went wrong, Arthur," Vanessa hissed into the receiver, her knuckles white on the steering wheel. "The security guard checked the secondary safe too early!"

"Calm down," her father, Arthur Cole's, deep voice answered over the line. "Did she sign the liability waiver before she fell?"

"No! She was supposed to be arrested for theft before the fall happened!" Vanessa spat, her voice trembling with rising panic. "Now Adrien is at the hospital with her, holding her hand like she’s family!"

"Listen to me carefully, Vanessa," Arthur warned sternly. "The Whitfield estate carries a fifty-million-dollar umbrella liability policy. If that housekeeper tells Adrien you pushed her, and the baby doesn't survive, you won't just lose the marriage—you will go to prison for attempted murder."

Vanessa swallowed hard, her mouth going dry. "What do I do?"

"Ensure that housekeeper never gives a formal statement to the police," Arthur commanded coldly. "I'm calling our family attorney right now. Get to that hospital."

Thirty minutes later, the surgical waiting room was suffocatingly quiet.

Adrien stood near the floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the rain streak down the glass. His mother, Eleanor Whitfield, stepped out of the private elevator, her face etched with deep worry as she hurried across the polished floor.

"Adrien!" Eleanor called out softly. "How is she?"

Adrien turned, embracing his mother briefly. "They took her into emergency surgery for a premature C-section. The fall triggered severe placental abruption. They're trying to save the baby."

Eleanor pressed her hands to her mouth, tears glittering in her eyes. "Oh, God... Grace has been like a daughter to this family for six years. How could this happen?"

Vanessa stepped out from the hallway shadows, wiping her eyes with a tissue. "It was a tragic accident, Eleanor. The marble steps were freshly waxed this morning. I told Grace to wait for assistance, but she insisted on carrying those heavy linens by herself..."

Eleanor turned slowly, her sharp gaze fixing onto Vanessa.

"Grace has navigated those stairs four times a day for six years, Vanessa," Eleanor said, her voice dropping into a quiet, icy tone. "Even seven months pregnant, she is meticulous. She never takes risks."

Vanessa’s expression stiffened slightly. "Are you implying something, Eleanor?"

"I am stating a fact," Eleanor replied, stepping closer to her son's fiancée. "And I find it extraordinarily convenient that a four-hundred-thousand-dollar bracelet vanished from the secondary safe at the exact same moment Grace fell."

"Are you accusing me of stealing my own engagement gift?!" Vanessa gasped indignantly, looking toward Adrien. "Adrien! Are you going to let your mother talk to me like this?!"

Adrien looked between his mother and his fiancée. The pressure in his chest was immense, but his sharp corporate mind was already analyzing the timeline.

"The secondary safe requires a biometric thumbprint and a six-digit rolling code," Adrien said quietly, his eyes fixed on Vanessa. "Only three people have that access. Me, my mother... and you, Vanessa."

Vanessa froze, the color draining from her cheeks.

Before she could speak, the double doors to the surgical suite swung open. A doctor in blue scrubs stepped out, pulling down his mask.

"Mr. Whitfield?" the surgeon asked.

Adrien stepped forward instantly. "How are they?"

"Mrs. Williams is out of surgery and stable," the doctor reported. "And your housekeeper has a baby girl. She’s small—just under four pounds—and currently in the Neonatal ICU on oxygen, but she is fighting."

Adrien let out a massive breath of relief, nodding deeply. "Thank you, Doctor. Can I see Grace?"

"She's waking up in Recovery," the doctor nodded. "She's demanding to speak with you immediately. She said it's about what happened at the top of the stairs."

Vanessa took an anxious step forward. "I should come too—"

"No," Adrien commanded firmly, his voice leaving no room for argument. "You stay here, Vanessa."
