Chapter 3 - The Waking Truth

The recovery room was dim, filled with the rhythmic beep of heart monitors and the soft hum of IV pumps.

Grace lay in the narrow hospital bed, her face pale, an oxygen tube resting beneath her nose. Her husband, Daniel Williams—a tall, hardworking mechanic with grease-stained calluses on his hands— sat beside her, clutching her right hand, his eyes red from crying.

The door pushed open, and Adrien stepped inside.

Daniel stood up instantly, his jaw set tightly, a mixture of rage and grief washing over his face. "Mr. Whitfield."

"Daniel," Adrien said quietly, stepping closer. "I am so sorry. I just came from the NICU. Your daughter is breathing on her own. She's strong."

Tears spilled down Daniel’s cheeks as he nodded. "Thank you, sir."

Grace shifted slightly in the bed, letting out a weak gasp of pain as she looked at Adrien. "Mr. Whitfield..."

Adrien sat in the chair on the opposite side of her bed, leaning close. "Grace, don't strain yourself. You're safe now."

"I didn't... slip," Grace whispered, her voice raspy and trembling. "She... she called me to the gallery..."

Adrien’s heart sank into his stomach. "Vanessa?"

Grace nodded weakly. "She accused me of stealing her diamond bracelet. She said someone was going to pay for it. I turned to walk away... to call you... and she pushed me. She grabbed my left shoulder and shoved me down the steps."

Daniel swore under his breath, his hands curling into tight fists. "I'll kill her. I swear to God, I'll—"

"Daniel, wait," Adrien urged, his voice stern but calm. He looked back at Grace. "Grace, are you thousand percent sure she pushed you?"

"I felt her hands on my back, Mr. Whitfield," Grace said, tears streaming into her hair. "I would never put my baby in danger. I begged her to help me at the bottom of the stairs, and she just stood there... smiling at me... waiting for me to lose consciousness."

A terrifying silence filled the small hospital room.

Adrien felt a cold, lethal rage blooming deep within his chest. He stood up slowly, adjusting his cuffs.

"Daniel, stay with your wife," Adrien said softly. "All medical bills, specialized care for your daughter, and private security for this room will be handled by my personal estate. No one touches Grace without my authorization."

"Thank you, Mr. Whitfield," Daniel choked out.

Adrien walked out of the recovery room and pulled his encrypted phone from his pocket, dialing his head of private security, Mark Vance.

"Vance," Adrien spoke into the receiver as he walked down the hospital corridor. "I want every inch of security footage from the mansion downloaded to my private server within ten minutes."

"Mr. Whitfield," Vance replied hesitantly over the line. "Ms. Cole requested the cloud servers be wiped twenty minutes ago. She claimed it was to protect family privacy following the accident."

Adrien’s eyes narrowed into slits of ice. "Did you wipe them?"

"Of course not, sir," Vance answered firmly. "My loyalty is to you and your mother. The master hard drives are untouched."

"Good," Adrien said coldly. "Bring the raw footage of the second-floor gallery and the grand staircase to my private study in one hour. And Vance?"

May you like

"Sir?"

"Don't let Vanessa leave the property."
