Chapter 9 - Healing the Estate

Six months later.
Spring had arrived in Chicago. The grounds of the Whitfield estate were blooming with vibrant tulips, fresh green grass, and sweet summer air coming off the lake.
The grand marble staircase inside the foyer—once the site of tragic horror—had been completely redesigned. Soft, plush navy-blue carpet runners had been installed down the center of the steps, anchored by elegant brass rods, ensuring safety and warmth throughout the grand home.
A large, beautifully framed photograph hung on the wall of the main gallery above the stairs.
It showed the entire Whitfield household family—Eleanor, Adrien, Grace, Daniel, their three older children, and little baby Hope, all smiling together under the sunlit courtyard.
Grace stood near the top of the stairs, wearing an elegant grey blazer, holding her tablet as she managed the morning estate operations.
Adrien walked up the stairs, carrying two cups of steaming coffee, handing one to her with a warm smile.
"Good morning, Executive Director," Adrien greeted playfully.
"Good morning, Mr. Whitfield," Grace smiled, taking a sip. "The new security protocols are fully integrated, and the afternoon catering team has arrived for Mrs. Whitfield's charity luncheon."
"Wonderful," Adrien nodded, leaning against the polished wooden railing. "And how is little Hope doing today?"
"She took her first steps this morning!" Grace announced proudly, her face beaming with pure maternal joy. "Daniel almost cried."
Adrien laughed warmly, his hazel eyes filled with genuine happiness. "She’s going to be running through these halls in no time."
The heavy front doors opened, and Eleanor walked inside holding little Hope in her arms, trailing behind Daniel and their two older boys, who were carrying boxes of fresh pastries from the local bakery.
The grand mansion—once a cold, quiet fortress plagued by corporate greed and social snobbery—was now filled with the sound of children's laughter, warm conversations, and genuine love.
Adrien looked at Grace, his expression turning sincere and profound.

"You know, Grace," Adrien said softly, looking around the bright foyer. "For a long time, I thought this house was just an asset... a symbol of corporate success. But you taught me what a real home is supposed to look like."
Grace looked at him, her heart swelling with gratitude. "We built it together, Adrien."
