Chapter 4 - The Footage

By 11:00 PM, the rain had turned into a torrential downpour over the Whitfield estate.

Inside Adrien’s massive, dimly lit mahogany study, the air was thick with tension. Eleanor Whitfield sat in a plush velvet armchair near the cold fireplace, holding a cup of tea she hadn't touched.

Adrien stood behind his broad oak desk. Across from him stood Mark Vance, plugging a high-speed flash drive into the main desktop computer.

The door swung open, and Vanessa walked in, wearing a fresh change of clothes—a soft cashmere sweater and black trousers. Her face was calm, calculated, and completely composed.

"Adrien, darling," Vanessa said smoothly, walking toward his desk. "Why are the security guards standing outside my bedroom? This is absurd. I am your fiancée, not a prisoner."

Adrien didn't look at her. "Sit down, Vanessa."

Vanessa blinked, noticing Eleanor’s icy glare from the corner of the room. She swallowed her irritation and sat in the leather chair opposite Adrien.

"If this is about the missing bracelet," Vanessa began, leaning forward, "my father's insurance investigator is already looking into Grace's background. Her husband runs an auto shop that is heavily in debt. It's obvious she stole it to pay off his business loans, and when she tried to hide it, she tripped—"

"Shut up, Vanessa," Adrien said, his voice terrifyingly quiet.

Vanessa froze, her mouth agape.

Mark Vance hit the spacebar on the keyboard. The massive sixty-inch wall monitor lit up, displaying high-definition black-and-white security footage from earlier that afternoon.

The screen displayed the second-floor gallery at 3:12 PM.

On the screen, Grace was walking with the stack of folded linens. Vanessa appeared from her bedroom suite, stopping Grace.

"Turn up the audio," Adrien commanded.

Vance adjusted the slider. The hidden directional microphones captured every single word clearly.

"...someone in this house is going to pay for it," Vanessa’s recorded voice echoed clearly through the study.

Vanessa’s face went completely drain of color. Her hands began to tremble subtly against her lap.

The video feed shifted to the angle beneath the second-floor arch, overlooking the top of the marble staircase at 5:45 PM.

On the screen, Grace turned her back to head toward the stairs. Vanessa stepped forward rapidly, her face contorted in anger. She reached out with both hands, grabbed Grace’s left shoulder, and shoved her violently forward!

Grace plummeted down the flight of stairs, tumbling helplessly until she crashed onto the marble landing below.

Vanessa stood at the top of the stairs, smoothing her sweater, watching Grace groan in pain without moving a single inch to help her for three full minutes.

Silence descended upon the study—a thick, suffocating silence broken only by the sound of heavy rain beating against the windowpanes.

Eleanor let out a sharp, horrified gasp, covering her face with her hands. "Oh, my sweet Lord..."

Adrien stared at the screen, his face completely motionless, his hazel eyes transformed into pure, unadulterated ice.

Vanessa took a frantic, shuddering breath, backing her chair away from the desk. "Adrien... please! Let me explain! She was disrespecting me! She was talking behind my back to your mother—"

"You tried to murder a pregnant woman," Adrien whispered, standing up slowly.

"It wasn't like that!" Vanessa shrieked, tears finally bursting from her eyes as panic seized her. "I just wanted her fired! I didn't mean for her to fall all the way down! I wanted her to drop the linens so I could accuse her of assault!"

"You shoved a woman carrying my employee's child down twenty marble steps," Adrien said, stepping around his desk, towering over her like a vengeful shadow. "And then you left her to bleed to death on my floor."

"Adrien, please!" Vanessa sobbed, grabbing at his sleeve. "I love you! We're getting married in two months! Think about our reputation! Think about the Cole and Whitfield merger!"

Adrien snatched his arm away from her grip with utter disgust.

"The wedding is canceled," Adrien declared flatly. "The merger is dead. And you are going to prison."

At that exact moment, heavy footsteps thundered up the grand staircase outside. The study doors swung open, and three uniformed officers from the Chicago Police Department stepped into the room, led by Detective Miller.

"Adrien Whitfield?" Detective Miller asked.

Adrien pointed a cold finger toward Vanessa. "Officer, arrest that woman for attempted murder, felony assault, and corporate fraud."
