Chapter 8 - The Trial of Vanessa Cole

Three months later.
The Cook County Criminal Courthouse was packed with news cameras, high-society reporters, and legal observers.
Inside Courtroom 402, Vanessa Cole sat at the defense table wearing an orange jumpsuit, her blonde hair dull, her hands restrained by handcuffs connected to a waist chain. Beside her sat her father, Arthur Cole, also in prison attire.
Judge Harold Vance presided over the bench, his face stern as he reviewed the final jury verdicts.
"In the matter of the State of Illinois versus Vanessa Cole," Judge Vance declared, his voice echoing through the silent courtroom. "On Count One: Attempted Murder in the Second Degree—Guilty. On Count Two: Aggravated Battery of a Pregnant Person—Guilty. On Count Three: Filing a False Police Report—Guilty."
Vanessa bowed her head, weeping quietly as her high-priced defense attorney stared down at his desk in defeat.
"And in the matter versus Arthur Cole," the judge continued, "On Count One: Federal Wire Fraud—Guilty. On Count Two: Grand Larceny—Guilty."
Judge Vance looked over his glasses at the two defendants with stern disapproval.
"The coldness, greed, and total lack of human empathy demonstrated by the defendants in this case is breathtaking," Judge Vance stated firmly. "You endangered the life of an innocent mother and her unborn child for financial gain and personal vanity."
The judge struck his wooden gavel down with a heavy bang.
"Vanessa Cole is sentenced to fifteen years in the Illinois Department of Corrections without the possibility of parole for ten years," Judge Vance ruled. "Arthur Cole is sentenced to twenty years in federal penitentiary. Court is adjourned."
Cheers erupted from the public gallery as police officers led a sobbing, hysterical Vanessa and her silent father away through the rear inmate doors.
Adrien sat in the front row beside his mother, Eleanor, and Grace, who was sitting comfortably holding a healthy, chubby three-month-old Hope in her arms.
Eleanor squeezed Grace’s hand gently. "Justice has finally been served."

Grace looked at her daughter, who offered a tiny, gummy smile, and breathed a deep sigh of utter peace.
"Yes," Grace agreed softly. "It finally has."
