Chapter 10 - A New Day

Six months later.
The private garden behind Daniel Cole’s sprawling country estate was blooming with early autumn flowers. The air was crisp and clear, filled with the sound of wind chimes and distant laughter.
Daniel stood near a brick pathway, leaning lightly on a dark wooden cane. Though he still required physical therapy to fully regain his stride, his mind was as sharp as ever, and the color had returned to his face.
A short distance away, Emma was running across the grass, chasing a golden retriever puppy that Daniel had bought her for her fourth birthday.
"Emma, slow down or you’ll trip!" Sarah called out from the patio table, where she was laying out lunch.
Sarah looked different now. She no longer wore a uniform; she managed Daniel’s personal charitable foundation, which focused on funding advanced neurological research and pediatric care units across the state.
Daniel walked slowly over to the table, setting his cane against the chair, and sat down beside Sarah. He reached out, resting his hand over hers on the wooden table.
"You don't have to check on me every five minutes, Sarah," Daniel said with a warm, relaxed smile that he had rarely shown in his past corporate life. "Dr. Aris said my motor control is up to eighty percent."
"I’m not checking your motor control," Sarah smiled back, her eyes soft. "I’m just making sure you’re real."
Daniel looked out at the garden, watching Emma fall onto the grass in a fit of giggles as the puppy licked her face.
"The board asked me to come back full-time yesterday," Daniel noted softly.
Sarah paused. "And what did you say?"
"I told them I’m resigning as permanent CEO," Daniel said gently. "I’m appointing Vance as chair, and I’m taking a advisory role. I spent thirty years thinking that power and market share were the only things worth building. I almost died believing that."
He looked at Sarah, then called out toward the lawn. "Emma! Come here a second!"
The little girl bounded across the grass, her hair messy, clutching her stuffed rabbit under one arm while the puppy trotted behind her. She stopped beside Daniel’s chair, leaning her chin on his knee just as she had done on the edge of the hospital bed months ago.
"Yes, Danny?"
Daniel reached down, gently tucking a strand of hair behind her ear, his eyes shining with a deep, quiet gratitude that words could never fully capture.
"Did I ever tell you what my favorite sound in the whole world is?" Daniel asked softly.
May you like
Emma shook her head, her big brown eyes curious. "No. What is it?"
"It’s your voice," Daniel said, lifting her up onto his lap and holding her close. "It’s the sound that brought me home."
