Chapter 9 - The Unraveling

The revelation hit Sarah like a physical blow. The police report had initially ruled the crash an accident caused by hydroplaning, but Daniel’s broken words changed everything.

Without disturbing Emma, Sarah called Vance immediately. Within thirty minutes, Vance arrived at the hospital alongside a trusted senior detective from the State Police Collision Investigation Unit.

Standing by Daniel’s bed, they listened as the recovering billionaire, speaking in slow, painful sentences, explained what had happened on the night of the crash.

"I found... the offshore transfers..." Daniel explained, his strength returning in tiny bursts. "Richard was embezzling... from the primary development fund. I confronted him at the office. He knew I was going to the District Attorney the next morning."

Daniel looked at Vance. "The telematics box... in my car. It records brake line pressure and ECU commands. I backed it up to a cloud server... the key is in my apartment."

The detective took out a notebook, his expression grave. "If the telematics show the brake control module was tampered with remotely or physically cut, this shifts from a traffic investigation to attempted capital murder."

By three o'clock that morning, state troopers executed a search warrant on Richard Cole’s penthouse and his private vehicle service shop. Hidden in the garage, technicians discovered electronic diagnostic equipment used to override the automated braking systems of high-end luxury sedans—matching the exact make and model of Daniel’s car.

At dawn, as the sun broke over the city, police vehicles pulled up to the front entrance of Cole Global Dynamics.

Richard Cole was led out of the lobby in handcuffs in front of dozens of news cameras and stunned employees. His suit was wrinkled, his composure entirely gone as reporters shouted questions about the attempted murder of his brother.

As he was pushed into the back of a police cruiser, Richard looked up toward the top floor of St. Jude’s Hospital in the distance, realizing that a three-year-old child’s love had completely destroyed his meticulously planned crime.
