Chapter 8 - Whispers in the Dark

Back at the hospital, the evening brought a profound silence to the Neuro-Trauma Recovery Unit. Security guards stood outside Daniel’s room, ensuring no unauthorized visitors gained access.

Sarah sat beside the bed, peeling an apple for Emma, who was fast asleep on a small cot in the corner.

Daniel’s breathing was still assisted by a low-pressure cannula, but the ventilator was gone. His eyes were partially open, tracking the shadows on the ceiling.

"Daniel?" Sarah spoke softly, setting the knife down.

Slowly, agonizingly, Daniel’s head turned an inch toward her. His dark eyes, usually so sharp and intimidating, were filled with a profound, vulnerable exhaustion.

"Sa... rah..."

The voice was barely a rasp, dry as paper, but the sound made Sarah’s heart skip a beat. It was the first coherent word he had spoken in nearly a month.

"I’m here, Daniel," she said, leaning close and taking his cold hand. "You’re safe. The lawyers stopped Richard."

Daniel’s brow furrowed, a flicker of his old, intense focus returning to his gaze. "Em... ma..."

"She’s right here," Sarah whispered, gesturing to the cot. "She never gave up on you. When the doctors told us you were gone, she kept saying you were just sleeping."

Tears gathered in the corners of Daniel’s eyes, slipping slowly down his hollow cheeks. He squeezed Sarah’s hand—not a reflex, but a firm, deliberate squeeze.

"He... tried... to..." Daniel struggled to form the words, his vocal cords raw from weeks of intubation.

"We know," Sarah said gently. "Richard tried to take everything. But Vance has the court orders now. You don't have to worry about the company."

Daniel shook his head faintly. "Not... company..."

He pointed his trembling finger weakly toward the bedside table, where his personal belongings—retrieved from the crash site—were held in a clear plastic bag. Among them was his encrypted personal phone and a small metallic key.

"Under... bed..." Daniel rasped, coughing weakly. "Drive... safe... box..."

Sarah leaned closer. "You have a drive in a safe box?"

"Richard... cut... the... brakes..." Daniel whispered, the terrifying truth finally spilling out into the quiet room.
