Chapter 5 - Inside the Scanner

The neuro-imaging floor was cold, lined with lead-shielded doors and heavy machinery. The massive fMRI scanner hummed softly, its powerful magnetic field ready to map the micro-vascular blood flow within Daniel Cole’s brain.

Daniel was carefully slid into the center of the white cylinder. Wires connected his vital monitors to the control room screen behind a thick pane of glass.

Inside the control booth, Dr. Aris sat beside a senior radiologist, Dr. Chen. Sarah and Emma stood near the door, while Richard and Vance leaned against the back wall, separated by a deep, hostile silence.

"We are establishing the baseline," Dr. Chen said, pressing a button on the console. The computer screens lit up with grey, cross-sectional images of Daniel’s brain. The cerebral cortex appeared dark and inactive—no brightly colored heat signatures that would indicate thinking, feeling, or processing.

"Flat," Richard noted under his breath, a subtle hint of satisfaction in his tone. "Just like the doctors said."

"Starting auditory test one: Control sounds," Dr. Chen announced.

Through headphones placed over Daniel’s ears inside the scanner, the system played white noise and classical music. The brain images remained dark grey. No change in oxygenated blood flow.

"Auditory test two: Relatives," Dr. Chen continued. He flipped a switch connected to a microphone. "Richard, speak into the mic."

Richard cleared his throat and stepped up to the desk. "Daniel. It’s Richard. The company is facing a critical junction. You need to rest now. I’m taking care of everything."

The screens flickered slightly. A tiny blue blip appeared near the auditory cortex—a faint electrical response to sound, but nothing more.

"Minimal auditory processing," Dr. Chen observed. "Basic brainstem reflection of sound waves. No higher cognitive engagement."

Richard crossed his arms, looking over at Vance. "There’s your answer. He hears noise, nothing else."

"Auditory test three," Dr. Aris instructed, looking down at Emma. "Emma, come here sweetie. Speak into this microphone just like you do in his room."

Sarah gently nudged Emma forward. The little girl reached up, taking the plastic microphone in her small fingers.

"Danny?" Emma’s high-pitched voice echoed inside the scanner tube. "It’s dark in there. Don't be scared. I brought Barnaby rabbit. We are waiting for you to wake up so we can get ice cream."

For five long seconds, nothing happened on the monitors.

Then, the radiologist gasped.
