Chapter 7 - The Battle Lines

The news of the fMRI results spread through St. Jude’s Memorial like wildfire. Within hours, Daniel Cole was transferred out of the standard ICU into the high-security Neuro-Trauma Recovery Unit on the top floor.

Vance acted with lightning speed. Using the MRI data, he filed an emergency motion with the state Supreme Court, stripping Richard Cole of his temporary medical power of attorney and appointing a court-ordered neutral guardian—Dr. Aris—to oversee Daniel’s care.

However, the war for Cole Global Dynamics was far from over.

In the boardroom on the fiftieth floor of the Cole Tower, Richard addressed a table filled with anxious shareholders and directors.

"The MRI showed minor residual electrical activity, nothing more," Richard lied smoothly, clicking through a modified slideshow prepared by his private legal team. "The doctors are clinging to false hope. Meanwhile, our stock has dropped twelve percent since the accident. If we do not vote to remove Daniel as CEO today and institute a permanent executive board, the merger with European Logistics will collapse."

In the back of the room, the heavy oak doors opened. Vance walked in, carrying a tablet connected to the hospital’s secure network.

"The merger will not collapse, Richard," Vance announced, his voice cutting through the hushed room. "Because Daniel Cole is no longer in a coma."

A collective gasp swept through the board members.

Richard slammed his hands on the table. "That’s a lie! I spoke to the clinic an hour ago!"

"He isn't fully awake, but he has emerged from the vegetative state into a minimally conscious state," Vance stated, pressing a button on his tablet. The large wall screen in the boardroom illuminated, displaying a secure live video feed from Room 701.

In the video, Daniel was propped up on pillows. His eyes were open—glassy, unfocused, but clearly open.

Emma sat on the edge of the bed, holding a picture book. Daniel’s right hand was resting on her knee. As the directors watched in stunned silence, Daniel’s fingers twitched, slowly curling around the fabric of the toddler’s dress. His pale lips moved, forming a silent, strained shape.

"He is communicating," Vance told the board. "And under section four of the corporate bylaws, any vote to remove a founding CEO while he exhibits conscious awareness is a direct violation of company policy. Try to take this company now, Richard, and every share you hold will be frozen in litigation for the next decade."

The board members immediately stood up, surrounding Vance to ask questions, leaving Richard standing alone at the head of the table, his corporate empire slipping through his fingers.
