Chapter 6 - The Spark in the Dark

A brilliant, burning amber glow erupted across the bottom center of the brain scan.

It spread rapidly from the auditory cortex into the limbic system—the brain's emotional center—and lit up the amygdala and hippocampus in vivid shades of bright red and yellow.

"Look at the blood-oxygen-level dependent signal!" Dr. Chen shouted, his fingers flying across the keyboard to capture the data. "That isn't a brainstem reflex! That is high-level emotional processing and memory retrieval!"

"That’s impossible!" Richard took two quick steps toward the glass, his face pale. "The brainstem was non-functional!"

"Look at the anterior cingulate cortex," Dr. Aris breathed, pointing at a glowing yellow cluster near the front of the brain map. "He’s recognizing her. He is processing the meaning of her words!"

Inside the tube, the cardiac monitor connected to Daniel spiked. His heart rate soared to 85.

"Danny!" Emma called out again, seeing the bright colors on the screen and thinking it was a game. "Danny, open your eyes!"

On the grey MRI image, tiny ribbons of orange light began snaking upward from the deeper brain structures into the frontal lobe—the region responsible for conscious thought, decision-making, and voluntary movement.

"He’s trying to wake up," Dr. Aris declared, turning to his team. "Cancel the end-of-life protocol immediately! Prepare a central line for high-dose neuro-protectants and hyperbaric oxygen therapy!"

Richard’s face twisted in panic. "This is an anomaly! A glitch in your software! You can't base a medical evaluation on a computer visual glitch!"

"That is real-time cerebral perfusion, Mr. Cole," Dr. Chen said coldly. "Your brother is alive in there. And he is listening to that little girl."

Vance stepped up beside Richard, his voice low and dangerous. "The legal threshold for brain death requires the total and irreversible loss of all brain functions. You just witnessed conscious cognition. If you attempt to touch his medical care now, Richard, I will have you arrested for attempted murder before you reach the elevator."

Richard stared at the glowing screens, his fists clenched so tightly his knuckles turned white. Without another word, he spun around and slammed his way out of the control booth.
