Chapter 10 - THE FUTURE OF THE MORETTIS

One year later.

The warm summer sun was setting over the hills of Bay Ridge, casting long golden light across the blue waters of New York Harbor.

On the back patio of Moretti Manor, a long wooden dining table was set with fine china, fresh pasta, and bowls of ripe fruit.

Clara’s grandmother sat at the head of the table, laughing merrily with Mrs. Gable as they shared stories about old Chicago. Dante and two lieutenants sat near the grill, enjoying cold glasses of Italian lemonade.

Clara sat on the porch swing, wearing a comfortable white sundress.

In her arms, she cradled a three-month-old baby girl with dark curly hair and bright, intelligent hazel eyes.

Her name was Elena.

Rico walked out of the French glass doors carrying a tray of fresh gelato. He set the tray down on the table, then walked over to the porch swing, sitting down beside his wife.

He wrapped his broad arm securely around Clara’s shoulders, pulling her close, leaning down to press a soft kiss against the baby’s tiny forehead.

"Is she sleeping?" Rico whispered softly.

"She just went down," Clara smiled, looking down at their beautiful daughter resting peacefully against her chest.

Across the green lawn, four-year-old Leo was running wildly with a golden retriever puppy, laughing under the clear blue sky, his cheerful shouts echoing through the quiet estate grounds.

Rico looked at his son, then at his daughter, and finally at Clara.

The dark, dangerous capo who had once ruled Brooklyn with ice and fear was gone. In his place sat a man whose heart was completely full, grounded in the warmth of a family that had survived the storm.

"Do you remember the night at Il Destino?" Rico asked softly, a handsome, gentle smile playing on his lips.

Clara looked up into his dark silver eyes, nudging his shoulder playfully. "You mean the night you threatened to burn down a restaurant because your son was throwing truffle risotto?"

Rico chuckled softly—a rich, warm sound that filled the evening air.

"I meant the night a brave waitress walked across a marble floor with a glass of warm milk," Rico corrected gently, reaching up to stroke the crescent scar beneath her jawline with his thumb. "And changed my life forever."

Clara leaned her head against his broad, solid shoulder, watching the sun dip below the horizon.

"It wasn't just milk, Rico," Clara whispered, closing her eyes as his warm lips kissed her temple. "It was love."

And there, beneath the peaceful skies of Brooklyn, the Moretti family had finally found their home.
