Chapter 2 - THE TOUCH OF SILENCE

Clara didn't answer the capo immediately. She didn't bow her head, drop her eyes, or offer a trembling apology.

Instead, she ignored the deadliest man in New York entirely.

She slowly lowered herself down onto both knees right on the hard marble floor, putting herself eye-level with the screaming three-year-old. She didn't reach out to grab him. She didn't make sudden movements. She simply sat on her heels, holding the glass of warm milk in both hands, letting the steam rise between them.

"It's very loud in here, isn't it, Leo?" Clara spoke softly.

Her voice wasn't elevated. It was a gentle, velvety whisper—a warm, soothing breeze cutting through a thunderstorm.

Leo’s screaming choked off mid-sob. He gasped for air, his tear-soaked face flushed crimson, his chest heaving under his velvet outfit. He stared at her with wide, wet blue eyes.

"Everyone is yelling," Clara continued quietly, tilting her head with a gentle smile. "Everyone is big, and everyone is angry. And your chest feels like it has a heavy stone sitting on top of it, doesn't it?"

Rico sat frozen in his leather chair. His hand slowly slid away from his suit lapel. Dante stood motionless, blood still dripping from his thumb, staring down at the waitress as if she were a ghost who had walked through the brick wall.

Leo let out a tiny, shuddering hiccup. He wiped his wet nose with the sleeve of his expensive shirt, his wide eyes locked onto Clara's face.

"I brought you this," Clara whispered, extending the glass half an inch forward. "It's warm milk. With a tiny bit of sugar at the bottom. It makes the heavy stone in your chest feel a little lighter."

Leo took one cautious, trembling step toward her.

He didn't scream. He didn't throw a punch. He reached out his small, shaking hands and took the glass from Clara’s fingers. He brought the glass to his lips and took three slow, thirsty gulps. Warm milk spilled down his chin, dripping onto his collar, but he didn't care.

The entire dining room watched in absolute, breathless silence. Fifty patrons sat like marble statues.

Leo set the glass down on the edge of the table. He took a deep, shuddering breath—the first calm breath he had drawn in hours.

Then, what he did next sent a shockwave straight through Ricardo Moretti’s chest.

Leo didn't turn to his father. He didn't look at his bodyguards.

He stepped directly between Clara’s open knees, reached up with his tiny, milk-stained left hand, and pressed his open palm flat against the left side of Clara’s neck—right over her pulsing carotid artery.

Then, his small thumb reached out and gently stroked a tiny, faint, crescent-shaped scar located just beneath Clara’s jawline.

He closed his eyes, rested his forehead against Clara’s shoulder, and whispered a single, quiet word into her hair:

"Mamma."

Rico stood up from his chair so fast his leather seat slammed backward into the floor. His face turned as white as powdered chalk. His silver-ice eyes dilated until they were nearly pure black.

"Where did you get that scar?" Rico rasped, his voice shaking with a terrifying, raw intensity.

Clara looked up from the boy, holding Leo gently against her chest. "What?"

Rico stepped around the table, his tall, imposing six-foot-two frame casting a massive shadow over her. He reached down, his gloved fingers grasping Clara’s chin, tilting her face forcefully toward the dim light of the crystal chandelier.

His eyes burned into the tiny crescent scar beneath her jaw.

"I asked you a question, girl," Rico whispered, his breathing suddenly ragged, unhinged, and dangerous. "Where did you get that scar?!"
