Chapter 4 - THE GILDED FORTRESS

Within ten minutes, Il Destino was completely cleared.

Patrons had been ushered out into the cool Manhattan night with free meal vouchers and strict warnings from Rico’s men regarding confidentiality. The staff had been sent home with a month's paid leave.

Outside, three black armored Cadillac Escalades sat idling at the curb, their tinted windows reflecting the flashing neon lights of Brooklyn.

Clara walked out of the restaurant doors carrying the fast-asleep three-year-old in her arms. Leo refused to let go of her apron; even in his deep sleep, his small fingers remained locked into the fabric.

Dante held open the rear door of the center Escalade. "After you, Miss Vance."

Clara hesitated on the pavement, looking down at her worn sneakers, then back at the looming dark vehicle. "Mr. Moretti... I have an apartment. I have a grandmother who needs her medication delivered by midnight. I can't just—"

"Your grandmother is already being cared for," Rico said, stepping up beside her. He adjusted his dark overcoat, his voice carrying an effortless authority that admitted no debate. "I sent two of my private medical aides to your apartment five minutes ago. She is being transferred to the private wing at Mount Sinai Hospital as we speak. She will have round-the-clock nurses and the best specialists in the country."

Clara’s jaw dropped. "You... you did what?"

"You are Elena’s blood," Rico said, stepping closer, his tall frame blocking the cold night wind. "Which means you are under my protection now. You will never work a double shift again. You will never worry about rent again. Get in the car."

"Is everything a transaction to you?" Clara asked, her eyes flashing with a sudden, fierce defiance that made Dante hold his breath. "You can't just buy people's lives, Mr. Moretti!"

Rico stared at her for a long, silent moment. For the second time that night, a dark, intrigued spark flickered in his silver eyes.

"My son hasn't slept in three days, Clara," Rico said softly, gesturing to the boy resting against her collarbone. "He hasn't touched another human being without screaming since his mother was murdered in front of him. You brought him peace in thirty seconds. I am not buying your life. I am begging you to save his."

The raw, stark honesty in the capo's voice disarmed her completely.

Clara looked down at little Leo, feeling his warm, rhythmic breathing against her chest. She let out a long, defeated sigh and stepped into the leather interior of the armored SUV.

Twenty minutes later, the convoy passed through massive iron security gates guarded by men carrying automatic rifles, entering the private estate known as Moretti Manor.

Perched atop the cliffs of Bay Ridge overlooking the dark waters of New York Harbor, the manor was a sprawling limestone fortress surrounded by thirty-foot stone walls, security cameras, and armed patrols.

As the car pulled up to the grand front entrance, a middle-aged woman in a crisp housekeeper’s uniform rushed down the marble steps.

"Master Rico!" the woman gasped. "Is the young master alright? We heard about the incident at the restaurant—"

"He's asleep, Mrs. Gable," Rico said, stepping out of the vehicle and reaching into the back to help Clara out. "Prepare the master guest suite in the east wing. Clara will be staying with us."

Mrs. Gable looked at Clara’s grease-stained apron and worn shoes, then at the sleeping boy held tightly in her arms. Her eyes softened instantly.

"Right away, sir," Mrs. Gable bowed respectfully. "Welcome to Moretti Manor, Miss Clara."

Clara carried Leo upstairs through wide mahogany hallways lined with Renaissance oil paintings and crystal wall sconces.

She laid him gently onto the massive king-sized bed in the nursery, carefully unbuttoning his shoes. The moment she tried to pull away, Leo stirred, letting out a small, anxious whimper, his hands reaching blindly into the dark.

"I'm here, sweet boy," Clara whispered, sitting down on the edge of the mattress, slipping her hand into his tiny grip. "I'm not going anywhere."

From the open doorway, Rico stood silently in the dark shadow, watching his son sleep peacefully for the first time in six terrifying months.
