Chapter 6 - THE WAR AT THE GATES

The storm hit New York at dawn.
Heavy gray clouds rolled in off the Atlantic Ocean, unleashing torrential rain that battered against the high glass windows of Moretti Manor.
Inside the grand dining hall, Clara sat beside Leo at the long mahogany table. The little boy was sitting on two stacked velvet cushions, happily eating blueberry pancakes while Clara read to him from a picture book about ships.
For the first time in six months, the boy was laughing.
His sweet, bright laughter echoed through the high-arched room, making Mrs. Gable shed silent tears of relief as she served fresh juice.
Rico stood near the arched window overlooking the front courtyard, holding a cup of black coffee. He was dressed in a tailored black suit, his coat lined with dark Kevlar armor.
He didn't look at the rain. He watched the main iron gates half a mile down the winding driveway.
"He looks like her when he laughs," Clara spoke gently, stepping up beside Rico, out of Leo's hearing range.
Rico turned his head, his silver gaze sliding down to Clara’s face. "He hasn't eaten a full meal since October. You saved him, Clara."
"He saved me too," Clara admitted quietly, looking out at the rain. "I spent five years in this city feeling like an orphan. I thought I had no one left in the world."
Rico reached out, his large hand gently covering her small fingers as they rested on the window sill. His skin was warm, firm, and grounding.
"You have us," Rico said, his voice carrying a deep, unshakeable promise. "As long as I draw breath, you will never be alone again."
BOOM!
A deafening, metallic explosion detonated at the front gates of the estate!
The floorboards beneath their feet vibrated violently. Smoke and fiery orange flames billowed up into the rainy sky as three heavy black armored pickup trucks rammed straight through the shattered iron gates, tearing up the manicured lawns!
Red emergency lights flashed instantly across the ceilings of the manor as loud alarms blared throughout the corridors!
"INTRUDERS ON THE WEST LAWN!" Dante’s voice barked over the house intercom system. "TAKE COVER!"
Leo let out a terrified scream, dropping his fork and scrambling off his chair!
Clara didn't hesitate. She lunged forward, scooping the three-year-old up into her arms, pressing his head tightly against her shoulder to block his ears from the sound of automatic gunfire echoing outside.
Rico pulled a sleek, silver semi-automatic pistol from his shoulder holster with terrifying speed, racking the slide with a sharp CLACK.
"Mrs. Gable!" Rico barked. "Take Clara and Leo to the panic room behind the wine cellar! Move now!"
"Rico, no!" Clara gasped, her hazel eyes wide with sudden, terrifying fear for him. "Come with us!"
Rico looked at her, his silver eyes burning with a dark, fierce passion that made her pulse leap into her throat. He stepped close, cupping her cheek with his free hand, pressing a hard, fleeting kiss against her temple.

"I spent six months grieving Elena because I was unprepared," Rico growled against her skin. "I will not lose her sister. Go!"
He turned around, raised his weapon, and stepped out into the grand hallway as the front heavy oak doors were blown inward by a breaching charge!
