Chapter 7 - THE PANIC VAULT

The subterranean wine cellar beneath Moretti Manor was dark, cool, and lined with centuries-old stone arches and thousands of vintage bottles.

Mrs. Gable pulled a heavy iron torch sconce on the far wall.

CLICK.

A four-foot-thick stone wall section groaned open, revealing a heavily reinforced steel vault equipped with independent air filtration, medical supplies, and live security monitor feeds.

Clara carried Leo inside. The boy was crying quietly now, holding Clara’s neck with a desperate, white-knuckled grip.

"Shh... I'm here, sweet boy," Clara whispered, sitting down on the leather sofa inside the vault, wrapping a heavy woolen blanket around them both. "Daddy is taking care of the bad men. We are safe."

Mrs. Gable locked the heavy steel vault door from the inside, pressing the digital override sequence into the keypad.

On the wall monitors, live camera feeds showed the battle unfolding on the ground floor above.

Salvatore "Sal" Maroni—the ruthless, gray-haired Don of the rival South Brooklyn family—had brought fifteen heavily armed mercenaries into the grand foyer. They wore black tactical gear, firing wildly into the marble pillars and artwork.

But Rico was not defending. He was hunting.

On the high-definition monitor, Clara watched in breathless, terrifying awe as Rico moved through his own home like an unstoppable shadow of death.

Flanked by Dante and six loyal Moretti enforcers, Rico dismantled Maroni’s strike team with cold, surgical precision. He fired his weapon with lethal accuracy, ducking behind stone arches, flank-routing the mercenaries, and driving them back toward the shattered front entrance.

"Master Rico built this house to be an impenetrable fortress," Mrs. Gable said proudly, monitoring the tactical screens. "Sal Maroni thought he could catch us unprepared. He made a fatal error."

Within fifteen minutes, twelve of Maroni’s men lay disarmed and unconscious on the ruined marble floor. The remaining three were fleeing down the driveway into the rain.

On the central screen, Sal Maroni stood alone in the center of the grand foyer, his weapon empty, his hands raised in desperate surrender as Rico walked slowly toward him through the smoke.

Rico stopped three feet from his rival. He didn't raise his gun. He simply stood there, rain and gunpowder soot dripping from his coat, his silver eyes cold and devoid of mercy.

"You killed my wife six months ago, Sal," Rico’s voice echoed through the camera microphone. "I let you live because I was broken. But today, you brought war into my house where my son and my family sleep."

"Rico... wait!" Sal pleaded, his voice cracking with terror. "We can make a deal! Half of the docks! The entire cargo shipping routes in Queens! Just let me walk out!"

Rico slowly shook his head.

"The Moretti family doesn't make deals with ghosts," Rico said softly.

He raised his weapon.

BANG.

The central monitor went black as smoke covered the camera lens.
