Chapter 2 - The Mask of Gray

The woman in the gray uniform slowly lifted her head. Her dark brown hair, usually worn in a tight, modest bun at the nape of her neck, had partially unraveled, soft strands framing her pale, tear-streaked face. Her breathing was ragged, her lips trembling as she stared up at the man standing above her in a tailored tuxedo.
"Ethan..." she whispered.
A collective gasp echoed through the ballroom. Several elderly socialites covered their mouths with gloved hands. Vanessa took a frantic step backward, her hand clutching her diamond necklace so tightly the silver links dug into her skin.
"This is absurd!" Vanessa shouted, her voice shrill, cutting through the shock of the room. "Ethan, look at her! Clara died two years ago! We attended her memorial service! We buried her! This woman is an impostor—a disgraced, opportunistic housemaid named Lauren who was hired through an agency three weeks ago!"
Ethan didn't hear a single word Vanessa said. The world had narrowed down to the woman kneeling before him on the marble floor.
He dropped his glass of scotch. It shattered near his shoe, dark liquid pooling onto the floorboards, but he didn't care. He dropped to his knees in the middle of the glass and spilled water, reaching out with a trembling, hesitant hand.
His fingers touched her cheek.
Her skin was warm. Real. Soft.
"It's you," Ethan choked out, a raw, uncharacteristic tear escaping his left eye and tracking down his cheek. "My God, Clara... it's you."
"Ethan, please..." Clara sobbed, her fingers clutching his wrists. "I didn't want to cause a scene... I was trying to leave..."
"Trying to leave?!" Ethan’s voice cracked with a terrifying blend of agony and rage. "You've been alive for two years?! You've been working in my house as a servant for three weeks while I mourned you every single night?!"
"She's lying to you, Ethan!" Vanessa interjected frantically, motioning to two estate security officers. "Marcus, Richard—remove this woman from the premises right now! She’s mentally unstable and manipulating the family!"
"Touch her," Ethan said, turning his head slowly toward the security officers, his tone dropping into a deadly, freezing quiet, "and I will personally ensure you spend the rest of your lives behind bars."
The guards took an immediate step back, dropping their gaze.
Ethan looked back at Clara, his hands framing her face, his thumbs gently wiping away her tears. "Where have you been? Why didn't you come home? Why didn't you call me?!"
Clara shook her head violently, panic filling her brown eyes as she glanced past Ethan's shoulder toward Vanessa. "I couldn't, Ethan! They told me... they told me you were the one who tried to kill me!"
The ballroom fell into a profound, suffocating stillness.
Ethan froze, his mind reeling as if he had been struck by a physical blow. "What... what did you say?"
"The car," Clara whispered, her body shivering violently against his touch. "The brakes failed on the coastal highway. Someone cut the lines, Ethan. And when I woke up in that clinic six months later with no memory... the people who rescued me showed me corporate documents, financial transfers, and threats signed with your personal seal. They told me if I ever came back to Caldwell Manor, you would finish the job and kill Noah, too!"
May you like
Ethan turned his head slowly, his eyes locking onto Vanessa, who was backed up against a marble pillar, her skin completely drained of color.
"Marcus," Ethan said, standing up to his full height, pulling Clara up with him and lifting little Noah safely into his left arm. "Lock every single gate on this estate. No guest, no vehicle, and no staff member leaves this property until the state police arrive."
