Chapter 5 - The Confession

The red and blue flashing lights of federal law enforcement vehicles illuminated the long, winding driveway of Caldwell Manor, casting flickering shadows across the dark oak trees lining the estate. Guests were finally allowed to leave through a secured side gate, their vehicles moving past the line of news vans that had already begun gathering outside the iron perimeter fences.

Down in the lower holding room of the manor's private security building, Vanessa Sterling sat at a stainless-steel table, her green silk gown wrinkled, her diamond necklace removed and placed in a plastic evidence bag.

Ethan walked into the room, closing the heavy steel door behind him. He sat down in the metal chair across from her, crossing his arms, watching her in absolute silence.

Vanessa looked up, her makeup smeared, her eyes red from crying. "Ethan... please. You have to listen to me. I didn't know about the car!"

"Save it, Vanessa," Ethan said, his voice cold and flat. "The FBI just executed a search warrant on your father's private residence in San Mateo. They found the original paper files Clara took from the audit department, along with the encrypted hard drives Evelyn Hart tried to destroy an hour ago."

Vanessa dropped her head into her hands, letting out a jagged, sobbing breath. "My father... he told me it was just going to be a scare! He said he was going to hire someone to disable her car so she’d get into a minor accident and miss the board meeting!"

"A three-hundred-foot plunge off a cliff into the ocean isn't a minor accident, Vanessa!" Ethan slammed his hand flat onto the metal table, the loud CRASH making her jump in her seat. "She nearly died! She lost two years of her life! My son grew up without a mother!"

"I loved you, Ethan!" Vanessa cried, looking up at him with desperate eyes. "I’ve loved you since we were twenty years old! When Clara came into your life at university, you completely forgot I existed! You gave her everything—the Caldwell name, the estate, your heart! My father saw an opportunity to save our business, and I... I saw an opportunity to finally have you!"

"You didn't want me," Ethan said, staring at her with pure disgust. "You wanted the title. You wanted the Caldwell trust. You stood in this house, played with my son, kissed my cheek, and watched me weep over Clara's portrait, knowing all along that she was locked away in a clinic in Mexico!"

"She was supposed to stay there!" Vanessa screamed, her voice cracking with insane rage. "She was supposed to die in that crash! Why couldn't she just stay dead?!"

Ethan slowly stood up from his chair, pulling a small audio recording device from his inner jacket pocket and hitting the stop button. The red light flickered off.

"Thank you, Vanessa," Ethan said quietly. "Special Agent Harris was listening to every word of that through the overhead feed. Your confession is complete."

Vanessa’s eyes widened in sheer, horrified realization. "Ethan... no! Please! Don't do this to me!"

"You took two years of my wife's life," Ethan said, walking toward the door without looking back. "I will ensure the federal prosecutors give you every single day of thirty years in a maximum-security prison."
