Chapter 6 - The Return to the Nursery

The third floor of Caldwell Manor was quiet as the first gray light of dawn began to creep through the tall arched windows. The grand ballroom below was empty, the broken glass swept away, the silence of the massive house restored.
Ethan walked slowly down the hallway toward the east wing—the nursery suite that had remained largely untouched for two years.
He pushed the white wooden door open softly.
A warm, yellow nightlight shaped like a star illuminated the cozy room. The walls were painted a soft sky blue, decorated with hand-painted clouds and flying wooden airplanes.
Clara was sitting in the rocking chair near the window, wearing a comfortable white cotton sweater and dark trousers Ethan had retrieved from her old wardrobe in the master closet. She was cradling three-year-old Noah in her arms, rocking him gently back and forth as the little boy slept soundly, his small thumb tucked into his mouth.
Ethan stood in the doorway, leaning his shoulder against the frame, watching them in absolute awe. For two years, this room had been a shrine of sorrow—a place he avoided because the empty rocking chair tore his soul apart every time he passed it.
Clara looked up, catching his eye in the dim starlight. She offered him a small, weary, but radiant smile.
Ethan walked quietly across the carpet, sinking onto the floor beside the rocking chair, resting his arm on her knee just as he had done hundreds of times when Noah was an infant.
"The FBI has taken Vanessa and her father into custody," Ethan whispered gently, reaching up to rest his hand over hers on the boy's back. "Evelyn Hart was arrested at the airport trying to catch a flight to London. It's over, Clara. They can never hurt us again."
Clara let out a deep, trembling breath, her shoulders sagging with a profound sense of relief that had been two years in the making. "It feels like a nightmare I’m finally waking up from, Ethan."
"I’m so sorry," Ethan choked out, leaning his head against her arm, his voice thick with unexpressed pain. "I’m so sorry I didn't find you sooner. I should have looked harder... I should have searched every clinic, every town..."
"Ethan, look at me," Clara said softly.
He lifted his head, his dark eyes swimming with tears.
Clara reached down with her free hand, her soft fingers cupping his face, her thumb gently tracing his cheekbone. "You brought me home. You listened to our son when no one else believed him. You held my hand in front of two hundred people and called me your wife when I was wearing a servant's uniform."
She leaned down, pressing her lips gently against his forehead, holding the kiss for a long, beautiful moment. "You saved my life twice, Ethan. Once from the ocean, and once from the dark."
Little Noah stirred in her arms, letting out a soft sigh, his eyes fluttering open in the soft light of dawn. He looked up at Clara, then reached out his tiny hand to grab Ethan's thumb.
"Daddy?" the boy mumbled sleepily.
"I’m right here, buddy," Ethan smiled, wiping his eyes with his sleeve.

"Is Mommy staying for breakfast?" Noah asked, his small voice filled with the innocent, pure hope of a child who had never stopped believing.
Ethan looked up at Clara, his brown eyes shining with absolute devotion. "Mommy is staying forever."
