Chapter 3 - The Broken Memories

Thirty minutes later, the grand ballroom had been evacuated. Guests had been escorted into the formal dining hall under the strict supervision of Caldwell private security, their phones temporarily impounded to prevent leaks to the press.

In Ethan’s private master study on the third floor, the atmosphere was thick with tension. Heavy mahogany bookshelves lined the walls, and a roaring fire in the stone fireplace did little to cut through the cold air inside the room.

Noah had fallen asleep on the leather sofa, exhausted from crying, his small hand still firmly clutching Clara’s gray apron string even in his sleep. Clara sat beside him, wrapped in a heavy cashmere blanket Ethan had placed around her shoulders. She held a warm cup of tea with both hands, her fingers trembling so hard the china clicked against the saucer.

Ethan stood near the desk, leaning against the edge, his tuxedo jacket discarded on a chair, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows. Across from him stood Dr. Kenneth Mercer, the Caldwell family physician who had been summoned to the estate on an urgent call.

"She’s telling the truth about her physical condition, Ethan," Dr. Mercer said quietly, placing his pen light back in his medical bag. "There are surgical scars near her temple consistent with severe cranial trauma, and old fractures on her ribs that healed without proper orthopedic alignment. Whoever treated her after that crash did so in a private, non-certified medical facility."

Ethan’s jaw clenched so tight the muscles in his face throbbed. "What about her memory, Kenneth?"

"Retrograde amnesia caused by severe trauma," Dr. Mercer explained, looking over at Clara with deep sympathy. "It's extremely common in high-impact accidents. She likely lost all personal identity for months. As her memories slowly returned in fragments, her mind was susceptible to psychological manipulation—especially if someone was deliberately feeding her false information."

Ethan walked over to the leather sofa, sinking onto his knees beside Clara. He reached out and gently covered her hand with his own. "Clara, look at me."

She turned her head slowly, her dark eyes filled with a mixture of profound love and lingering fear.

"I loved you from the second I met you at university," Ethan said, his voice soft, steady, and filled with a solemn truth. "I spent six months on a boat off the coast of Big Sur, watching divers drag the ocean floor for your body. I almost ended my own life because I couldn't bear the thought of raising Noah without you. I would have given up every dollar in the Caldwell empire just to hear your voice for five seconds."

Clara stared at him, tears welling up in her eyes once more. "I... I wanted to believe that, Ethan. But when I woke up in that small clinic in Mexico... I didn't even know my own name. A woman named Evelyn came to see me every week. She brought me food, paid for my medicine, and showed me news clippings of you."

"Evelyn?" Ethan frowned, his brows knitting together. "Evelyn Hart? Vanessa’s personal secretary?"

Clara nodded slowly. "Yes. She told me her name was Sarah. She said she was working secretly to protect me. She showed me legal papers transferring my personal share of the Caldwell shipping trust to Vanessa’s offshore accounts... papers that bore your signature authorizing the transfer three days after my accident."

"I never signed any transfer papers!" Ethan growled, his voice rising in outrage. "The only papers I signed were authorizing the search teams!"

"I didn't know that!" Clara cried softly, reaching out to touch Ethan's forearm. "I was terrified! She told me if I stayed hidden, Noah would be safe. She said you were planning to marry Vanessa to consolidate corporate power, and that I was an obstacle your family wanted removed!"

"Then why did you come back three weeks ago as a housemaid?" Ethan asked, his voice filled with a desperate need to understand.

Clara looked down at her sleeping son, gently smoothing a lock of dark hair from his forehead. "Because six weeks ago, my memory finally returned completely. I remembered holding Noah in the nursery. I remembered his voice. I realized that even if you hated me, even if you wanted me dead... I couldn't live another day without seeing my baby. I applied to the staffing agency under the name Lauren Vance. I took the lowest maid position at the manor just so I could catch a glimpse of him from the hallway windows."

Ethan closed his eyes, pressing his forehead against her knee, a heavy, ragged sigh escaping his chest. "My God... you were in this house for three weeks..."

"I stayed in the east servant quarters," Clara whispered. "I was going to leave tonight after the gala. I saw you with Vanessa on the balcony earlier... I thought you had truly moved on. But then Noah ran across the ballroom floor..."

The heavy wooden door of the study burst open.

Marcus, Ethan’s chief of security, stepped into the room, his face dark and grim. "Mr. Caldwell, we have a situation downstairs. Vanessa Sterling just attempted to leave through the staff garage in her sports car. My men blocked the gate, but she isn't alone."

Ethan stood up instantly, his dark eyes hardening into pure, unadulterated steel. "Who is with her?"

"Her father, Senator Sterling," Marcus replied. "And he’s brought two armed state troopers with him, demanding your immediate arrest for illegal detainment."
