Chapter 7 - Reclaiming the Past

Three weeks later, the morning sun broke over the Pacific coastline, casting a brilliant golden light across the terraced gardens of Caldwell Manor. The news of the Sterling family's corporate scandal and Clara Caldwell’s miraculous survival had dominated international headlines for days, but inside the gates of the estate, the world had slowed down into a peaceful, healing rhythm.

Clara stood on the master bedroom balcony, wearing a simple beige linen dress, holding a warm mug of tea as she looked out over the ocean. Her hair was down, blowing softly in the sea breeze.

Behind her, the bedroom door opened, and Ethan walked out onto the balcony, wearing a dark blue sweater and trousers. He wrapped his arms around her waist from behind, pulling her back against his chest, resting his chin on her shoulder.

"You're thinking again," Ethan murmured gently, kissing her cheek.

"I'm just remembering," Clara said softly, resting her hands over his arms. "Two months ago, I was sleeping on a narrow cot in a servant’s quarters in Mexico, terrified that every footstep in the hallway was someone coming to take me away. Now... it feels like that happened to a completely different person."

"Dr. Mercer says your physical recovery is progressing perfectly," Ethan said, turning her gently in his arms so she was facing him. "And the legal team finalized the restoration of your identity yesterday. You are officially Clara Caldwell again in every government database, every trust document, and every corporate ledger."

Clara smiled, reaching up to fix the collar of his sweater. "And what about Caldwell Global?"

"The board unanimously voted to appoint a new independent auditing firm," Ethan said with a grin. "And we’ve established a fifty-million-dollar foundation in your name to support victims of human trafficking and medical fraud in rural clinics."

Suddenly, the balcony doors were pushed open wide, and Noah came marching out, wearing a bright yellow raincoat and oversized rubber boots despite the clear, sunny sky.

"Mommy! Daddy!" Noah yelled happily, holding up a red plastic bucket full of garden soil. "Look! I found four worms near the fountain!"

Ethan burst out laughing, stepping forward to pick up his son, bucket and all. "Four worms?! That's a record, buddy! Are we taking them on a fishing trip?"

"Yes!" Noah cheered, wrapping his arms around Ethan's neck. "With Mommy!"

Clara laughed—a clear, musical sound that filled the morning air—and walked over to wrap her arms around both of them.
