Chapter 1 - THE SLAP AT BLACKWOOD CEMETERY

Rain had turned Blackwood Cemetery into a field of gray mud and trembling flowers.

Mara Bennett knelt beside her mother's grave, one hand resting protectively over the gentle curve of her five-month pregnancy.

She had come alone.

That was how she wanted it.

No reporters.

No curious neighbors.

No politicians pretending to care.

And certainly no members of the Whitmore family.

Her mother's grave sat beneath an old oak tree, far from the polished marble monuments belonging to senators, governors, and wealthy families.

A simple stone.

A simple name.

EVELYN BENNETT BELOVED MOTHER SHE NEVER STOPPED BELIEVING

Mara pressed her fingers against the cold lettering.

"I wish you were here, Mom."

Her voice broke.

"I don't know what I'm doing."

Wind moved through the trees.

For a moment, she imagined her mother's voice answering.

You already know.

Mara closed her eyes.

Then she heard footsteps.

High heels.

Slow.

Deliberate.

She turned.

A woman in a white designer coat stood several yards away.

Charlotte Whitmore.

Daughter of Senator Richard Whitmore.

One of the most powerful political families in the state.

And the woman who had spent the last six months making Mara's life miserable.

Charlotte's blonde hair was perfectly styled despite the rain.

Her expression was not.

"You really came here."

Mara slowly stood.

"I didn't come here to see you."

Charlotte glanced at the grave.

"Of course not."

Her smile was cold.

"You came to make another scene."

Mara frowned.

"What are you talking about?"

Charlotte walked closer.

"You've already embarrassed my family enough."

Mara's hand instinctively covered her stomach.

"I'm not responsible for your family's reputation."

Charlotte's eyes dropped to Mara's belly.

"No."

Her voice became quieter.

"But you are carrying something that belongs to my family."

Mara stared at her.

"You don't get to talk about my baby like it's property."

Charlotte's face tightened.

"You know perfectly well who the father is."

Mara said nothing.

That silence seemed to enrage her.

"Say his name."

"No."

"Say it."

Mara looked toward her mother's grave.

"This is my mother's funeral site. I'm not discussing him here."

Charlotte laughed.

"Still pretending you're innocent."

"I'm not pretending anything."

"You slept with Adrian Vale."

The name hung between them.

Adrian Vale.

The mysterious billionaire whose family fortune had been built through shipping, private security, real estate, and businesses nobody discussed in polite company.

To the public, he was a ruthless businessman.

To people who knew the city's darker corners, he was something else.

A man powerful enough that even politicians chose their words carefully around him.

And according to Charlotte, he was Mara's secret.

Mara swallowed.

"Adrian and I don't owe you an explanation."

Charlotte stepped closer.

"You stole him."

Mara almost laughed.

"I didn't steal anyone."

"You knew he was supposed to marry me."

"I didn't know."

"You knew!"

"I didn't."

Charlotte's hand suddenly moved.

The slap came so quickly that Mara barely saw it.

SMACK.

Her head snapped sideways.

For several seconds, everything went silent.

Mara touched her cheek.

Her eyes filled with tears.

Not from the pain.

From humiliation.

Charlotte breathed heavily.

"You should have stayed away from him."

Mara looked at her.

And for the first time, something inside her stopped being afraid.

"You hit a pregnant woman."

Charlotte's expression flickered.

Then hardened.

"Don't use your pregnancy to manipulate me."

Mara stared at her in disbelief.

"My mother is buried here."

"I don't care."

"You should."

"Why?"

Charlotte leaned toward her.

"Because your mother died owing my family money."

Mara froze.

"What?"

Charlotte smiled.

"You never wondered why she was so sick at the end?"

Mara's blood ran cold.

"What did you just say?"

Before Charlotte could answer, a deep voice came from behind them.

"That's enough."

Both women turned.

A man stood between the cemetery gates.

Black suit.

White shirt.

Dark hair slicked back by the rain.

Two men followed several paces behind him.

But Mara barely noticed them.

She knew that face.

Adrian Vale.

The baby's father.

The man she had spent five months trying to forget.

He walked toward them without hurrying.

Charlotte's face went pale.

"Adrian."

He didn't look at her.

His eyes were fixed on Mara.

Then he saw the red mark on her cheek.

His expression changed.

The temperature in the cemetery seemed to drop.

"Who did that?"

Nobody answered.

Adrian looked at Charlotte.

"I asked you a question."

Charlotte stepped backward.

"It wasn't—"

"Who?"

Charlotte's lips trembled.

"She provoked me."

Adrian's gaze became ice-cold.

"That wasn't my question."

Mara stepped between them.

"Adrian, don't."

He looked at her.

"You defended her?"

"No."

Mara's voice shook.

"I don't want violence."

Something in his expression softened.

Only for her.

Then his eyes moved toward her mother's grave.

Charlotte suddenly spoke.

"She doesn't know the truth."

Adrian went still.

"What truth?"

Charlotte smiled nervously.

"The truth about Evelyn Bennett."

Mara turned.

"What about my mother?"

Charlotte took a step backward.

But Adrian was already moving.

He stopped her with a single look.

"Tell her."

Charlotte swallowed.

"Your mother didn't die naturally."

Mara's heart seemed to stop.

"What?"

Charlotte looked toward Adrian.

"And he knows exactly why."

Mara slowly turned to him.

Adrian said nothing.

Rain slid down his face.

For the first time since she had met him, Mara saw something she had never seen in his eyes.

Fear.

Not for himself.

For her.

Adrian reached for her hand.

"Mara, we need to leave."

She pulled away.

"No."

His jaw tightened.

"Please."

She stared at him.

"You knew?"

Adrian didn't answer.

That was answer enough.

Mara's eyes filled with tears.

"You knew my mother was in danger?"

"I knew something was wrong."

"And you said nothing?"

"I was trying to protect you."

"From what?"

Before Adrian could respond, the sound of tires echoed beyond the cemetery gate.

One black SUV.

Then another.

His security men immediately turned toward the road.

Adrian's expression changed.

"Get behind me."

Mara shook her head.

"What is happening?"

Adrian looked toward the approaching vehicles.

Then at Mara's pregnant stomach.

And finally at the grave.

His voice dropped to a whisper.

"Someone doesn't want your mother's secret uncovered."

The first SUV stopped.

A door opened.

And an unfamiliar man stepped into the rain holding an old photograph.

He looked directly at Mara.

Then he shouted:

"Ask Adrian why your mother died eleven years ago!"

Mara's blood ran cold.

May you like

Adrian grabbed her hand.

And for the first time, she realized that the man she had been trying to escape might be the only person standing between her unborn child and whoever had just come looking for them.
