Chapter 9 - THE HEALING AT BLACKWOOD

A month passed.

The news of Senator Whitmore's arrest and subsequent confession dominated national headlines. The entire corrupt political network that had plagued the state for decades was systematically dismantled.

Charlotte Whitmore, stripped of her family's wealth and status, left the state in shame to avoid secondary accomplice charges.

On a warm, sunny afternoon in late autumn, Blackwood Cemetery was transformed.

The rain had cleared, leaving behind blue skies and soft golden light filtering through the colorful leaves of the old oak tree.

A fresh, magnificent white marble headstone now rested over Evelyn Bennett’s grave, surrounded by hundreds of fresh white lilies—Evelyn’s favorite flower.

EVELYN BENNETT HER TRUTH SHINES FOREVER BELOVED MOTHER AND GUARDIAN OF JUSTICE

Mara stood beside the grave, wearing an elegant cream-colored dress that accommodated her now six-month pregnancy.

Adrian stood beside her, his hand resting gently over hers as they looked down at the new monument.

"She would have loved the lilies, Adrian," Mara said softly, resting her head against his shoulder.

"She deserved a palace, Mara," Adrian replied, kissing the top of her hair. "This was the least I could do."

Mara looked up into his dark grey eyes—the eyes that had once terrified her, but now offered her total peace and safety.

"I'm sorry I doubted you, Adrian," Mara whispered softly. "When Charlotte said those things... I was so consumed by pain."

Adrian took both of her hands in his, looking down at her with profound sincerity.

"You had every right to doubt me, Mara," he said gently. "I kept secrets from you because I was afraid of losing you. But I promise you, from this day forward, there will never be another lie between us."

He dropped to one knee on the soft green grass.

Mara gasped, her hand flying to her mouth.

Adrian pulled a velvet box from his coat pocket, opening it to reveal a breathtaking, flawless six-carat cushion-cut diamond set in platinum.

"Mara Bennett," Adrian said, his voice filled with deep, unwavering devotion. "You saved my soul when you walked into my life. You gave me a reason to fight for something better than power. Will you marry me, and make me the happiest man alive?"

Tears of pure happiness welled in Mara's eyes. She nodded repeatedly, a brilliant smile breaking across her face.

"Yes!" she whispered. "Yes, Adrian! A thousand times yes!"

Adrian stood up, slipping the ring onto her finger before pulling her into a sweet, passionate kiss beneath the golden leaves of her mother's tree.
