Chapter 2 - THE BLOOD EVIDENCE

The man holding the old photograph was dressed in a dark tactical coat, his eyes cold and unblinking despite the steady rain.

Behind him, four heavily armed men stepped down from the second SUV, their tactical rifles kept lowered but instantly accessible.

"Step away from the girl, Vale!" the man shouted above the wind. "Senator Whitmore wants the Bennett ledger returned today!"

Adrian didn't step back. Instead, he pulled Mara firmly behind his frame, his body forming an impenetrable barrier between her and the armed squad.

"You're on consecrated ground, Vance," Adrian said, his tone ominously calm. "And you're speaking to my wife."

Charlotte's jaw dropped in horror. "Wife? Adrian, you're not married to this servant!"

"She carries my heir, Charlotte," Adrian answered without taking his eyes off Vance. "In my family, that makes her sacred."

Mara pressed her back against the damp bark of the old oak tree, her breath coming in short, ragged gasps. Her hands remained pressed to her abdomen, where she felt a subtle flutter—the baby reacting to her spike of adrenaline.

"What ledger?" Mara shouted over Adrian's shoulder, her voice shaking. "What are you talking about? My mother was a housekeeper for the Whitmore estate!"

Vance laughed bitterly, holding up the photograph. It was a faded Polaroid showing a younger Evelyn Bennett standing outside a concrete vault, holding a heavy leather-bound book stamped with the seal of the State Treasury.

"Your mother wasn't just a housekeeper, girl," Vance called out. "Evelyn Bennett was Senator Richard Whitmore's chief accountant before he framed her for embezzlement to cover up a fifty-million-dollar offshore bribery scandal!"

Mara felt the world spin beneath her feet. "No... that's impossible. My mother lived in poverty. She died because we couldn't afford her kidney treatments!"

"She died," Vance countered coldly, "because Senator Whitmore instructed the local pharmacy to tamper with her dialysis supply eleven years ago, the moment she threatened to turn the ledger over to the federal prosecutor!"

The truth hit Mara like physical blow. Tears spilled hot down her cold, rain-soaked cheeks. She stared at the back of Adrian's neck.

"Adrian..." she whispered, her voice cracking with pure anguish. "Is that true? Did Charlotte's father murder my mother?"

Adrian took a slow breath, his jaw locked tight. "Yes."

"And you knew?"

"I found out six months ago," Adrian admitted softly, his voice carrying a devastating weight of guilt. "When I hired you at my estate, I thought I was offering you safe haven. But the moment I realized who your mother was, I began buying up Whitmore debt to destroy them. I wanted to hand you Richard Whitmore's downfall on a silver platter before I told you."

"You lied to me," Mara sobbed, stepping away from him into the open rain. "Every time you held me... every night we spent together... you knew my mother was murdered!"

Charlotte grabbed Vance's sleeve. "Take her! Grab her now before my father's career is destroyed!"

Vance raised his hand, signaling his men to advance. "Move in!"

"Touch her and none of you leave this cemetery alive," Adrian commanded.

He didn't draw a weapon himself. He simply raised his left hand and snapped two fingers.

From the tree line surrounding Blackwood Cemetery, a dozen shadows detached from the gloom. Adrian's personal strike force—shadow operatives trained in urban counter-terrorism—emerged with silenced weapons trained squarely on Vance's squad.

Red laser sights instantly dotted Vance's chest and Charlotte's white coat.

Charlotte shrieked, dropping to her knees in the mud.

Vance froze, his eyes widening as he realized he had walked into a trap. "Vale... you can't start a war with a United States Senator."

"I didn't start it," Adrian said, stepping forward until he stood inches from Vance's chest. "Richard Whitmore started it eleven years ago when he touched Evelyn Bennett. I am merely finishing it."

With a swift, brutal movement, Adrian slammed his fist into Vance's jaw, dropping the tactical team leader instantly to the muddy earth.

"Secure them," Adrian ordered his men coldly. "And bring Charlotte to the primary holding facility."

He turned back to Mara. She was trembling uncontrollably, her face pale as milk, looking at him with a mixture of heartbreak and profound terror.

Before she could faint, Adrian stepped in, swooping her up into his arms and carrying her toward his armored sedan.
