Chapter 8 - THE CONFRONTATION AT THE GATE

Rain continued to drizzle over the front courtyard of Fort Vale, where smoke still drifted from the ruined iron gates.

Senator Richard Whitmore stood beside his sleek black town car, dressed in an expensive cashmere coat, surrounded by four nervous state troopers.

"Vale!" Whitmore shouted as Adrian walked out onto the driveway. "You've committed federal kidnapping! Release my daughter immediately, or I will have these officers place you under arrest!"

Adrian stopped ten feet away, his arm wrapped securely around Mara's waist.

Behind them, two security guards escorted Charlotte Whitmore out into the courtyard. She looked disheveled, her white designer coat covered in dirt, her face red from crying.

"Daddy!" Charlotte wailed, rushing toward her father. "He locked me in a cellar! Arrest him!"

Senator Whitmore pulled his daughter behind him, glaring at Adrian. "You're done, Vale. Your empire ends today."

"Is that so, Senator?" Mara stepped forward, her hand resting over her pregnant stomach, her hazel eyes fixed on the man who had destroyed her mother.

Whitmore looked at her with utter contempt. "Stay out of this, girl. You're just a maid's daughter who got lucky."

"My name is Mara Bennett," she said, her voice ringing clear and strong across the driveway. "And my mother was Evelyn Bennett—the woman you murdered eleven years ago to cover up your greed."

Whitmore laughed dismissively. "You have no proof, you little fool. Evelyn died of kidney failure."

"She died of acute heavy-metal poisoning ordered by your office," Mara corrected him, stepping closer. "And five minutes ago, the FBI received the complete digital ledger my mother hid before she died."

Whitmore's dismissive smile vanished instantly. His face turned a ghastly, pale grey. "What?"

At that exact moment, six unmarked black SUVs tore through the ruined gate, sirens blaring!

Dozens of federal agents in tactical vests poured out, weapons raised!

"Senator Richard Whitmore!" the lead FBI agent called out over a megaphoned speaker. "Step away from the vehicle and put your hands behind your head! You are under arrest for grand corruption, treason, and the first-degree murder of Evelyn Bennett!"

Charlotte screamed in terror as the state troopers immediately stepped back, refusing to protect the Senator.

Whitmore stared at Mara in absolute horror as federal agents forced him to his knees on the wet asphalt, clicking heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.

As they dragged him toward the federal vehicle, Whitmore looked at Adrian. "You destroyed me for a maid!"

Adrian walked over, leaning down to look the disgraced senator in the eye.

"She isn't a maid, Richard," Adrian said, his voice dropping into an icy whisper. "She is the future Mrs. Adrian Vale. And you will think of her every single day for the rest of your life in a maximum-security cell."
