Chapter 3 - THE VAULT AT FORT VALE

The ride out of Blackwood Cemetery was executed in complete, suffocating silence.
Mara sat curled up in the corner of the leather back seat, clutching a dry wool blanket Adrian had wrapped around her shoulders. Adrian sat across from her on the facing bench, watching her every breath with quiet, burning intensity.
"Where are you taking me?" Mara asked quietly, her eyes staring blankly at the rain sliding down the dark tinted glass.
"To my private residence in the hills," Adrian said. "Fort Vale. It is fortified with Class-4 ballistic glass, independent power, and forty armed guards. Senator Whitmore's hitmen cannot reach you there."
"I don't want your guards," Mara whispered, a tear tracing down her cheek. "I don't want your money, or your security, or your secrets. I just want my mother back."
Adrian reached across the gap, his large, warm fingers gently closing around her cold ankles. Mara didn't pull away, but she didn't look at him either.
"I know," Adrian said softly, his voice laced with rare, raw vulnerability. "I know I lost your trust today, Mara. You have every right to hate me. But until your baby is born and Richard Whitmore is behind bars, I will not let you out of my sight."
Thirty minutes later, the armored limousine passed through a reinforced steel gate cut directly into the granite cliffside of the Hudson River Valley.
Fort Vale rose out of the forest like a modern stone fortress—an architectural masterpiece of slate, concrete, and floor-to-ceiling glass overlooking the turbulent river below.
As the car stopped beneath the covered portico, a team of private medical personnel rushed forward with a wheelchair.
"I can walk," Mara insisted, pushing the blanket aside and stepping out on her own feet.
Dr. Sarah Vance—Adrian's private physician and no relation to the gunman at the cemetery—stepped forward gently. "Miss Bennett, please. Your blood pressure is dangerously high. You've experienced severe physical and emotional shock."
Mara allowed Dr. Vance to guide her up the grand travertine steps into a master suite on the top floor.
The room featured a roaring central fireplace, plush cream carpet, and a massive bay window looking out over the misty valley. On a side table sat a silver tray loaded with hot broth, fresh bread, and herbal tea.
While Dr. Sarah attached a fetal monitor to check the baby's steady heartbeat, Adrian stood by the door, his hands clasped behind his back like a silent sentinel.
"The baby's heart rate is elevated, but stable," Dr. Sarah announced after a few tense minutes, looking up at Adrian with a approving nod. "She needs absolute bed rest for the next forty-eight hours. No visitors. No stress."
"Understood," Adrian said.
Once the doctor left, Mara turned her head on the pillow, looking directly into Adrian's dark grey eyes.
"Where is Charlotte?" Mara demanded.
"In the lower level quarters," Adrian replied calmly. "She will remain there until her father turns himself over to the federal grand jury."
"You can't just kidnap a senator's daughter, Adrian!" Mara warned, her voice rising. "That's illegal!"
Adrian walked over to the side of the bed, leaning down until his face was inches from hers. His thumb gently brushed the red mark Charlotte had left on her cheek.
"She put her hand on you, Mara," Adrian murmured softly, his eyes flashing with a dark, dangerous light. "She put her hand on my child. In my world, she is lucky to be breathing."

"I don't want you to ruin your life for me," Mara whispered.
"My life was nothing before you walked into my estate six months ago with a tray of tea and an attitude that refused to bow to my authority," Adrian said, a faint, tender smile gracing his lips for the first time that day. "You brought light into this tomb, Mara. Now let me destroy the dark for you."
