Chapter 7 - THE RECKONING

Mara didn't flinch. She held the flash drive tightly in her fist, standing tall against the threat.

"My mother died to protect this truth," Mara said, her voice dropping into a cold, steady register. "You'll have to kill me to take it."

"With pleasure," the mercenary sneered, taking a step forward.

BANG!

A single gunshots echoed through the narrow hallway!

The mercenary froze, his eyes widening in shock as a clean entry wound appeared in the center of his chest. He collapsed to the plush carpet, revealing Adrian standing in the doorway behind him, his tactical pistol smoking, his coat stained with soot and rain.

"Adrian!" Mara cried out.

Adrian dropped his weapon, rushing across the room and pulling her into a desperate, crushing embrace. He held her against his chest, his hands trembling as he checked her head, her shoulders, and her stomach.

"Are you hurt? Did he touch you?" Adrian asked, his voice raw with panic.

"I'm okay... I'm okay," Mara soothed him, wrapping her arms tightly around his neck. "He didn't touch me."

She pulled back slightly, holding up the tiny flash drive. "I found it, Adrian. My mother left the evidence inside her music box. It's all here—every crime, every bribe, every name."

Adrian stared at the tiny drive in her hand, then looked up into her eyes with profound reverence.

"Your mother was a hero, Mara," Adrian murmured softly. "Now let's make sure her sacrifice wasn't in vain."

Ten minutes later, in the secure library, Adrian inserted the flash drive into his encrypted server.

The monitor flooded with thousands of financial documents, recorded phone calls, and signed requisitions—including an explicit wire transfer authorization from Senator Whitmore to a rogue pharmaceutical distributor detailing the compound used to poison Evelyn Bennett.

"It's over," Adrian declared, pressing a key that transmitted the entire database directly to the Director of the FBI and the Chief Prosecutor of the State Supreme Court. "By sunrise, the Department of Justice will issue an emergency arrest warrant for Senator Richard Whitmore."

Marcus stepped into the room, bowing respectfully. "Boss... Senator Whitmore is at the front gate right now. He arrived with four state police escorts, demanding Charlotte's release."

Adrian looked at Mara, offering her his hand. "Would you like to come deliver the news yourself?"

Mara took his hand, her expression resolute. "Yes."
